You're definitely better off doing it yourself if using any kind of synthetic oil.

You can find good deals on standard oil changes that make it worth paying someone else to do it.

I take my 2012 Pilot to the Honda dealer here in Huntsville. He does it (synthetic) for $55 and washes and vacuums my vehicle at no extra charge.

I change the wife and I vehicle's oil because I have the garage area to do it and the tools to lift the car safely and do the job easily. I bring the old oil to the plant and dump in the waste oil bin. I understand a lot of people don't have those options and pay to get it done. The only thing that worries me is some pot head kid making $8 an hour that has no clue of what a torque wrench is or how aluminum pans with steel plugs can go bad quickly working on my $5000 engines.

Jiffy Lube's Pennzoil Pure Plus Platinum is best there is

Base oil from gas-to-liquid technology.

Mineral oil molecules = many sized, and jagged rocks

Synthetic oil molecules = consistent marbles

GTL base oil synthetic oil = clear as water and helps fuel efficiency

You win back $ by extended drain interval 3X (or more) and ~10% fuel efficiency plus peace of mind that you have the very best in your engine.

Good choice

Interesting... None of my Mercedes or BMWs required this, but VW does?

Southpoint does for me. Maybe I got screwed

I’m approaching 100k anyway so it might be moot

I thought everyone on the OT made at least $100/hr. So changing the oil yourself is a minimum of a $150 investment plus the tools, gross hands, having to deal with the leftover oil. Add that up and you are probably 2 hours in plus oil and filter. So that's about $250. Let the pros do it for $50.

Either do it yourself or let a dealership do it. I’d rather go after a dealership if they frick it up and damage is done.

For the record, I do all mine myself. I know for sure what oil is going in and I do an engine bay and other fluid inspections while the oil is draining.

Get you an oil suction pump and you don't even have to get dirty or go underneath the car. Just did the oil change on my mercedes with Mobil 1 and I think I spent $70 total and that was for an 8qt change. Nice that I only need to do it every 15K miles.

Depending on the oil filter location.

I have a steel skid plate to contend with.

Does Shell pay you by the word or just a flat rate per post?

We always just go to the dealership, because there's always a coupon to do it for $40 to $50. Of course that's to get you in the door and then try to upsell you on some alleged issues they find, but I always just 'take it under advisement' and leave, unless I know it is a legit problem. Plus on our 5,000 mile schedules almost half the time there is some other scheduled maintenance due in the manual, which I follow.

Is nearby and gives me some quality web surfing time. Not gonna sweat the small stuff in life.

Bring your Porsche to the dealership for an oil change and feel a lot better about $107.

When did guys get too candy-arse to change their own oil?

My dad taught me how to change the oil on our car when I was a teenager. I haven't changed the oil on a car since then.

I could take the time to reteach myself on changing the oil and whatnot, or I could just pay $40 to have someone else do it and I'd be on my way.

I choose the latter.

My VW’s warranty is voided if I get oil changed outside of dealer

Get them to show you that in writing. It is against the law of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. A provider of a warranty cannot tie validity of it back to certain brand parts or particular service providers.

A salesman at Price Leblanc told me that many yrs ago and someone told me about this about a year later. I went back to the dealer and asked about it and they denied any such requirements in their warranty.

love these threads when half the OT claims you’re a pussy because you don’t change your oil yourself. If I’ve got the time and money to have someone do it for me, why would I do it myself?

I’m not an OT baller by any means but it costs me $65 to get an oil change and tire rotation and it’s done in 30 minutes.

I work 2 blocks from a mechanic. That makes it a no-brainer. Leave it there and pick up after work.

Unless your disabled or very elderly, you should always change the car oil yourself. It puts hair on your chest and it will put desire into the heart of any woman worth your notice.
