Dads are more useful with 6-12 month olds then they are new borns

It’s the smart way to do it if possible.

I prefer it when they break it up to be honest. Much easier to cover 2-3 weeks here and there rather than 2 whole months at once.

It makes 100x more sense for fathers to take it in spots vs burning their entire paternity leave immediately after birth.

I got 2 weeks paid and took 4 weeks annual leave after.

I lost out on a promotion because of it, and I wouldn't change it for anything. 6 weeks in a bubble together enjoying the most precious gift you can ever get.

Wife had a section so it gave her time to get onto her feet for a bit. Also as we are both children of divorce by the time immediate family have had their visits if I didn't take any extra time off it would have all been used on them. Really helped me know things like the routine and allowed my wife to feel more comfortable leaving him with me for extended periods.


If you don't own the company why wouldn't you take everything you can? If you're worried they are going to replace you it's probably not the place you want to be working anyway.

I heard the toughest part about a man taking paternity leave is when he has to tell his dad he’s gay.

There is almost no downside to paid parental leave. I got two weeks paid for both my kids and took it. It was awesome to have that family bonding time.

Now my company is up to 5 weeks paid for paternity leave. The common thing seems to be take the first two weeks and take the last 3 after the wife goes back to work to extend that time out of daycare.

At my company, women now get 12 weeks paid/was 8 when I had my second kid was born in 2017.

Many years ago I get a call - two men employed by the same entity have claimed FMLA paternity leave for the same kid.

I prepared an affidavit for each to sign. It was an acknowledgment of paternity with some additional language to the effect that the affidavit could be used to establish child support obligations.

Neither guy signed it LOL.

You are either swimming in the cash or grossly underpaying your employees to be able to afford it. 6 months paying for zero labor output for a small business owner is huge.

2-3 days barely covered the labor and delivery for 2 of our 3 pregnancies, since my wife had 2 long and complicated deliveries.

He has 22 employees. Most are likely over the age of having kids.

Of the remaining 10 or so, they will likely mostly cap out at 2 kids. Spread that out over a few years. If those employees feel valued and stay with him long term, that is a great return on that investment.

My opinion is that it should be at the sole discretion of the employer.

Surely you calculate the "cost" of that benefit and account for it in salaries/wages.
