re: What’s with the OT’s obsession with oilfield baws?

Nope. Just a 2 year old Mustang GT that never leaves the garage

Most O&G companies give great retirement packages and company trucks

Meh, I work in the industry with an engineering degree. Office work mostly on the business side with some technical included, so I consider myself far from a baw type. I obviously have had to work closely with many of the typical blue collar types in the industry. There are plenty well rounded individuals who just happen to have taken that career path. But then there are a lot that fit the stereotype of having an 80k truck, 75k boat, deer lease, etc. and then send their kid to some shitty public school or complain as soon as their hours dry up. It's not an unwarranted "hate". Just a bit inflated on this particular board. And the reason I think it's inflated is that most people cannot have an original idea or come up with something that's actually funny.

Most of the truck nut oilfield baws aren't working for the O&G companies, they're working for a service company or are working contract...it is a high flying lifestyle with a lot of downside exposure. But if you're blue collar, there's hardly any other job that is going to stuff money in your pocket like the oilfield.

And still no retirement and get their truck reloaded
What's funny is that the largest local Petrochemical company gives a 7% 401k match plus a pension to their employees.

I wonder what the participation rate is.

Or how quickly they pull it out paying income tax and a 10% penalty after they get layed off

I’m a consultant for an O&G company and my office is right next to the meeting room. They constantly have meetings about benefits and retirement.
They had a lunch and learn about 401ks last week actually.
I know it’s anecdotal, but participation seems pretty high here.

Probably because there are problems with the participation. We've never had one of those because he don't need to be lectured on not being a financial dumbass.

It's not like they are getting laid off then waiting around for 6-12 months for another job. There literally are not enough workers (for all positions both craft and staff) to fill open positions. Turnaround season and de-staffing are all a part of it. What the OT thinks about when it comes to oilfield baws are the one's that travel from turnaround to turnaround every few weeks or months. As soon as a job is complete, they move on to the next one with little to no downtime. If there is downtime, it's because they want it, not because they cannot find work.

I always find the stereotype and perception on here pretty funny compared to what it is in Houston where most of the jobs are like yours, corporate office jobs that pay well but more volatile than normal.

HAHAHA the BR office for my company (11 story building) just had a lunch and learn and it's 100% all engineers, IT workers, business consultants and accounting.

A decade ago, they wish that was the turnaround time.

I'm sure a majority are nice and well-rounded folks.
It's just the baws that don't pay their taxes and spend all their money on toys that they can't afford when shite hits the fan that are the people the OT loves to talk about.

My company, which is all engineers and geologists, does the exact same thing.
