There are thousands of white collar college educated men and women working in the O&G industry in the South. Or for companies who provide services for O&G companies. Engineers, Supervisors, IT, Finance, Scientists, etc for O&G companies. They live financially conservative lives, provide for their families, pay their taxes, and make good honest livings.

And at the other end of the spectrum is the 1-2 "oil field baws" we all know or have met from small towns, that aren't college educated or have real careers. But when the O&G industry is hot in the area, they benefit greatly off of working long grueling blue collar jobs for great salaries (considering their education and experience). These people don't actually work in the O&G industry that powers the South, Texas, and Louisiana's economies, most work for contracted service companies and know they are on borrowed time. But Yes, some of the stereotypes are still true: they probably drive unnecessarily large trucks and may or may not be financially responsible adults. blah blah blah.

i think in the OT's attempt to be funny, mixed in with some of the OT's jealous and hatred for high gas prices has now lumped everyone who works in or for O&G into the same category of "oil field baw / truck nuts yaw yaw yaw" lame arse joke. which is absolutely ridiculous and stupid. but very very OT-esque ....

Thanks. I've been looking into changing careers to O&G. What I have looked up about the industry contrast the standard depiction on this board. There is a blue collar element, but it seems relatively unstable compared to the degreed professionals.

basically this. Jealousy over the fact that a guy with little to no education is out-earning them by a wide margin. Its the same with the jealousy of plant workers.

meh, I doubt that, also, those jobs seem to be feast or famine, oil prices keep going down, banks will be like "we're comin'" for those toys, plus, as someone has pointed out, those types don't ever seem to save for the proverbial rainy day, tortoise and the hare analogy fits

Yeah people are definitely jealous of their impending layoffs.

Well, it affects everyone in the industry, top to bottom.

Oh I know, I grew up in the industry. I know what the booms and busts do to people.

I just don’t think anyone is jealous of that cycle. Yeah the money is nice, but it’s not guaranteed even within the next 5 years. Especially with the big players heavily involved in alternative energy.

I think there needs to be an OT battle royal to settle this once and for all. At sonic of course...

Oilfield baws v.s. The OT rich

it'll be an epic battle of
F150's v.s. luxury sedans
white oakleys v.s. ray bans
shots of fireball v.s. pours of blantons
bud light v.s. DDH GITM

A cultural clash for the ages with the OT on the line
Some will win...some will lose...most will get Jodied while the battle takes place.
Let's rumble

I was about 3 months away from having this happen to me. I was contemplating bouncing from an O&G giant to Schlumberger for what would about to a $15k/year pay raise and a slightly better title/position. Nailed the interview, met the team, and some paperwork had even kicked off.

Then boom. Radio silence from anyone there.
Feels weeks later they announced the what 2k+ layoffs in Houston.

Whewwww

Pettiness mostly. The rest are jaded because they were tossed out the industry like TH03.

maybe we could settle it at the greatest OT landmark of the all... chick-fil-a. If we wanted to brawl there, I'm sure it would be "their pleasure" to accommodate.

Bunch of poors jealous of oilfield baws making more than them at their IT jobs

I envision 30% of OT is computer nerds that work in IT

Change my mind

I'm an IS nerd that makes more than most oilfield baws, and I work from home. What do I win?

I think the negative stereotype comes from all the toys these people buy. There's some truth to that.

The stereotype comes from the areas in which these "baws" place financial value/importance. They'll drive a 80k truck, have a 10k atv, a 70k boat, a deer lease (whatever that costs), and then live in a fricking trailer while sending their kids to a shite school.

I don't think they'd be made fun of if they lived like responsible adults.

It is always interesting when you know some of the younger people in the industry that don't save their money during boom times.

The old hats who have gone through a full cycle try to warn them... It usually falls on deaf ears.

But generally the obsession is fueled by the O&G guys sitting on their arse in some break area posting dumb shite on here while they wait on a widget to be inspected or repaired.

to be fair, it's not limited to that profession or income range, I've got a friend in NY that is ridiculously wealthy, we were driving out to his "summer" home in Easthampton a few years ago and he commented on some of the mansions and estates on the way that had realtor's signs up, he said they were young investment banker/trader types that were "only" making 4-5 mil a year and not saving a penny, had to fall back to their primary residence when the market was so bad, circa 05-09ish

I never can decide which is funnier - the threads bashing O&G folks or the threads about new law grads who are soon to be crushed by disappointment
