But generally the obsession is fueled by the O&G guys sitting on their arse in some break area posting dumb shite on here while they wait on a widget to be inspected or repaired.

I am going to guess 95%+ of the O&G or plant baws on here (like me) sit in an office with a college degree.

to be fair, it's not limited to that profession or income range, I've got a friend in NY that is ridiculously wealthy, we were driving out to his "summer" home in Easthampton a few years ago and he commented on some of the mansions and estates on the way that had realtor's signs up, he said they were young investment banker/trader types that were "only" making 4-5 mil a year and not saving a penny, had to fall back to their primary residence when the market was so bad, circa 05-09ish

Very true. In my field I have several peers making 1M+ annual who don't save enough.

My rule is 40% of income and 75% of bonuses during expansion cycles.

meh, I doubt that, also, those jobs seem to be feast or famine, oil prices keep going down, banks will be like "we're comin'" for those toys,

Ok, so they are more volatile than other occupations, but please list the industries/professions that are immune to layoffs. There aren't any. And that still doesn't address the obsession.

plus, as someone has pointed out, those types don't ever seem to save for the proverbial rainy day, tortoise and the hare analogy fits

fair enough. But why should that matter to anyone other than the "baw" or his creditor?

in my observation, the ones mocking the plant/O&G workers are the same ones who are bitching about their college debt in relation to their shitty starting salary or inability to buy/do anything cause they cant find a job- even though they have that degree. They are living at home or in a shitty apt., driving the same crappy car, riding the bus, or looking for a job they can walk to while the O&G/Plant worker is driving a new truck.

the whole thing is asinine as neither suffers profit or loss based on the luck/misfortune of the other.

And this isn't close to true. I mean, maybe for some, but for a lot of us, we just think you guys are ridiculous.

A smart service hand could've saved and invested intelligently and retired before 35. Not many go that route though.

I have family that can’t seem to stop with the self loathing, woe is me complaining about having to work with his hands to provide for his family. Bashes anybody who went to college cause ‘he didn’t need that to be a provider’.
I used to work the 7/7 away from home but I went back to school so I could work the 8-5 and be home every day. Just gets old.

It's all a matter of perspective. I see people bitching online about all sorts of things; nurses, mothers, tipping, salaries of others, president, etc. People bitch because of a number of things.

I will move every few years to follow the projects. I choose to do this for now because I can make (and save) a hell of a lot more than if I stayed in one city. Until I have a wife or kids, I see no reason to slow. Hell, I am pushing for my next project to be overseas. (I really want somewhere in Africa or the Middle East)

So you're saying the O&G IT baws are the ones we really should be rallying against?

I'm a former plant baw sitting in an office without a degree. I get the degree next month. I make less now but damn, I'd hate to go back on my tools and be around plant construction hands. I got so much shite from them for going back to school lol
