What’s up with the windshield wiper condom they put on the back of SUVs?

What are these things doing?
Everyone just ends up forgetting they’re on there and they fly off and end up in the Pacific Ocean.
They don’t put them on the front wipers.
Any car wash experts out there know?

I don't know, but I was told it was a measure to protect the car wash's equipment. Maybe their little towel thingies get caught in the wiper. 
Perhaps the front ones are hidden well enough under the hood.

Generally your front ones sit below the hood a bit. Back one can get caught in it. Some put that plastic over it. Others used to put the blue tape, not sure if that's still a thing.

It's 100% from attended car washes like Benny's or Geaux Clean. It's to protect the rear windshield wiper from catching the side brushes that go around the back of the vehicle.

I think they're so the machine brushes don't get caught on them and either pull your wiper or pull the brushes out. Avoid's damage to your car and/or the machine's equipment. (Avoiding damage liability) ;-)
At some wash's, the attendant's tape the wiper down to your back window. I hate the tape personally, but I understand the risk.

They put painters tape on them at washes here. You can spot the lazy people on the road
