We have a few utility:bucket trucks at the local hotel. I guess they in town due to expected outages due to ice/snow. Anyway why do they always raise the bucket when not in use? What’s up with that?

I think it's to prevent the hanging bucket being a hazard to other people driving in the parking lot.

They typically hang way off the back and can be easy to strike with another car if parked in a standard parking spot.

To make sure the hydraulics are functioning properly. If the bucket lowers overnight, then they know they might need some maintenance.

There are controls in the bucket that can't be disabled as a safety precaution, they raise the buckets so that nobody will get in the bucket and screw around with it

Usually keep tools in them, keep them from getting stolen.

They are working.

Entergy contracts quite a bit out to take care of the work load.

Don’t worry, your bill will reflect

I’ve heard there is a fiberglass “break” in the boom that makes them insulated to prevent electrocutions, ie so it’s not a ground if it comes in contact with an energized wire. If condensation builds up in there it can cause the electricity to jump that fiberglass insert. They leave the boom extended to prevent condensation buildup.
