Ranking the cities I've lived in:

1. Charleston (Summerville), SC -Great place to live
2. La Maddalena, Italy - Small island in the Med, but a once in a lifetime experience.
3. Orlando, FL - So much to do. Had a blast. It was much smaller when I was there ('83 -'84)
4. Shreveport 40 years ago -it was a nice town. Lots of good memories.
5. Saratoga Springs, NY - Worked so much I didn't get to enjoy the area as I wanted.
6. Haughton, LA - nice town but too close to Shreveport which is no longer a nice town.
7. Groton, CT - dreary pit stain
8. Great Lakes, IL - See above X2
9. Middletown, NY - these last three are a triumvirate of crime infested, crappy places to live. It's hard to rank one worse than the other two, they all sucked. Middletown's one positive is it's a short train ride to the Big Apple

As an adult, I've lived in VA, OH, and FL. My least favorite of them by far was Virginia. I lived in the Norfolk/Va Beach area and for a metro area of almost 2 million people, there was absolutely nothing to do there once I saw all of the American Revolution stuff (which was cool).

Virginia Beach has got to be the most overrated beach area in the country.

As an adult I've lived in LA, MS, TN, FL and now Texas. Currently in West Texas, and its the worst. Folks here are so "Texas proud", but they cant bother to pick up their trash or their dog's poop. They cant be wrong in anything. Middle of nowhere, no rivers, lakes. Uugh. And did I mention the wind? My god, we are under a 65 mph wind advisory today and the NWS said to keep small animals inside! WTH.

I’ve lived in LA, MO, OK, NC.

Oklahoma was the worst. North Carolina was the best. By far.

I love the Twin Cities honestly but the DMV, taxes blow. Otherwise I don't mind MN

Interestingly enough I’d rank Chicago as the best city I’ve lived in, but would rank Illinois as the worst state, if that makes sense. Illinois has nothing going for it after you leave the Chicago city limits.

Combine the bad weather, high taxes, horrible financial situation, zero interesting natural features, and it’s a pretty wretched place to live. I can’t fathom living in a place like Peoria or Rockford. If you are going to live in a shithole at least pick a shithole with warmer weather and lower taxes.

My rankings:

1. North Carolina. Ocean, mountains, 4 seasons but with a mild winter and hot but manageable summers. Moderate taxes and cost of living. This is a fantastic place to live.
2. Minnesota/Wisconsin tie. Minneapolis is better than Milwaukee but Minnesota has nothing to compete with Madison. Weather is a push.
4. Illinois.

The city you live in is much more important than the state, though.

Definitely truth to this. I listed Alabama as my least favorite and living in Montgomery was a major factor. I've heard good things about other areas.

Alaska or Louisiana

Hate the cold and winters in Alaska sucked balls the years I was there. It’s cool at first, then you adapt to the environment and it’s just a drag.

Louisiana’s problems are well known here.
