I have lived for a year or more in New York, Indiana, New Jersey, Louisiana, Colorado and Mississippi. I have lived abroad . I have been all over the place. Easily the worst, most boring, least impressive place I have ever lived was the God forsaken state of Mississippi.

The part of AL you live in is very important. There are almost two distinct states in terms of education, entertainment, property values, etc.,
I know LA is similar but in my experience (which isn't necessarily true, I know), the blending of the two realities is a bit more pronounced.

Best to worst. Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri.
Just personal preference and the weather had a lot to do with it (hot summers bum me out). Except Missouri, Mo. is mostly meth head racists from my experience. I have no clue how that state get a pass from not being called out as, as backwards and racist as people give the south a bad rep for. Springfield might be the most white trash place I've ever been and I've been to the Florida panhandle.

Winter in Minnesota is absolutely miserable, but I certainly wouldn't call the state a shite hole. As far as answering the OP, Mississippi is the worst , California and Texas the best, for very different reasons.

I've lived in Louisiana (twice), Illinois, Florida, NY (twice), Connecticut, Italy, and S. Carolina. I don't know about state, but the worst town I've lived in was Middletown, NY.

Born in Natchez but moved away to Louisiana at 4. Dad lives in Bay Saint Louis. It’s the only OK part of MS but still not a paradise by any means.

Lived in Alabama, Minnesota, Texas and Wisconsin. Minnesota was the worst with Wisconsin being a close second. Summer is the best season to be in each of those states but even then there can be some horrible weather days. Spending time outside in the winter is fine doing ice fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, hunting and snowshoeing but I’d rather enjoy the outdoors in warm weather.

For me best to worse would be California, North Carolina, Arkansas & Illinios. From Illinois and currently reside back here.
