Growing up we lived on a couple of acres with lots of mature pine trees. Even before we were old enough to help mow, my brother and I had to pick up limbs before our dad mowed. The rule was anything bigger than his thumb had to go.

Anyway, one Saturday we’d picked up limbs and he was mowing. We missed limbs in two places maybe 150-200 sf each. Our dad brought us out, showed us instead of stopping he’d just mowed around them, then gave us each a pair of scissors and told us to mow those spots ourselves.

Then he brought out the camcorder and recorded it for posterity. My dad was a high school principal and I don’t know how many people have told me about watching me cut grass with scissors. Plumber’s crack and all.

The bright spot I guess is that after he got tired of filming us (thank God camcorders in the early 90s were heavy) he went inside and eventually fell asleep in his recliner. Push mower to the rescue.

It all worked out in the end. It turned out that he had three kids from a prior marriage that he hid from my mom. He had abandoned them and they were all put into the foster system. The son ended up living with us when he was 15 and I was 13. We got along pretty well but he was a hell raiser and confided in me that he was going to breakup their marriage. Two years later they were divorced. His dad was also a drug addict and his son ended up selling him meth helping to further destroy his dad’s life after the divorce. My childhood and teen years were no joke but ya know… character building.

Punishment? Today they call it child abuse and would put my parents and step dad in jail.

Given out? One time I took every privilege my now 28 year old son had away one by one for slamming his bedroom door and not apologizing.

I started with taking his bedroom door away and worked through everything from there. In the end he was sleeping on the damn floor in a bare room with a sheet. His mom broke before he did. Little shite never did apologize.

Last spring I heard him tell my granddaughter (his daughter) to say she is sorry and peanut said “no, I’m not sorry” and I laughed my arse off. She’s going to be just like him which on balance is a great thing.

I have a scar on my forearm from a cigar burn. This is what you get in my house when you spill paint in the garage.

Some of these posts are hard to believe (I believe you), but a lot this is pretty far from normal discipline.

When I was in high school my dad knew that I was afraid of heights and he was a power lineman. I was doing bad in a history class and every test and quiz I failed he made me throw the hooks on and climb up and down an old abandoned power pole. I went from a 66 to an 84 in that class

Oldest daughter was a hell cat when she was little. First week of kindergarten she got in trouble, I gave her a whipping, the very next day she got in trouble again and the school said they were gonna kick her out if she got in trouble again. I whipped her arse again. To the day she graduated high-school she never got in trouble again.

I destroyed my middle daughters cell phone because she would not stop arguing when her mother. She was already in trouble and wasn't supposed to have the phone.

The worst I got was whipped by a board with nails in it by my mother. She rarely ever whipped us but when she got mad look out she was picking up what ever was close and whipping you with it.

I've seen my brother get slapped down twice by my dad, he deserved it.

My dad had an old school thick leather belt that he’d use for run of the mill incidents but he usenthe big arse buckle with a dog on it for extraordinary incidents.

We got caught jumping on the bed after being told not to. My dad made my brother and I choose either to be spanked or to eat soap. Gave us five minutes to decide and walked out.

Agonizing decision. We chose soap. One and only time. Spankings from then on out.

One day at a playground with my brother and some friends, by brother somehow cut his head wide open on some stray piece of metal. Blood was pouring from his head and since we weren't far from the house I tried to carry him home but was too weak to do so.

My larger friend ended up having to and brought him to my parents with me behind him. My mom raced my brother to the hospital, which unfortunately left me with my dad. He brought me to the garage and just started punching me with wicked shots to the face and body because I wasn't the one the one to bring my brother home.

At the time it felt like I was getting beat by Mike Tyson, the blows were so hard. I told myself I would never be weak again and when I could start lifting weights I started and haven't stopped.

For my "sub standard" performance in School I was forced to miss opening day of deer season.

Thank you. It wasn’t a “normal” childhood by any means (lived in a storage shed from 10 - 15 years old) but it has made me more appreciative for what I have now and while I can have a short fuse I’ve become much better in controlling it rather than it controlling me. My wife is amazing and our son is really well behaved. Thank God. Everybody has bumps in the road but it doesn’t have to define who you are.

Soap in mouth when I used a word I wasn't supposed to.

I was like 6 and wrote myself a check using my Dad's check book. He told me it was fraud and he had me sit in my room all day like I was in prison and I was brought my lunch and dinner.

Freshman/Sophomore year of HS I didn't play hard enough for him at a basketball game, so he dropped me off a mile from home and made me run home.

When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds—pretty standard, really...

This didn't happen to me, but a friend of mine had his bed removed for a month. He had to sleep with no pillow on the hardwood floor.

I was scared of his dad after this.

I was a pretty good kid so I didn’t get into trouble too often but I was hard to punish because spanking and grounding just made me mad and I’d dig my heels in even more.

When I was 11, I was a huge book worm. I read books everywhere. So mom decided to ban me from reading for a week. She used to say it was the most effective punishment she’d ever found for me.

On the other hand, my brother hated reading so she’d make him do a book report.

Torture for me was being left at home while dad went to the camp for the weekend. I'd have much preferred an arse whipping.

Did you beat your dad's arse later in life when he had a weak moment that he wasn't strong enough for?
