What's the point of passing with no hope of passing again?

On the way to Grand Isle last week, I got behind 2 Oversize Loads of what looked like oilfield equipment. They had a chase truck in front and behind them. They turned down 308 at the Mathews gas station and were ahead of me when my light turned, so I just relaxed for an easy 25 minute follow to Larose. I gave them a little extra room, and they were doing 50-55 mph, so no big deal. Some A-hole towing a boat decided he had to pass me to get closer to the chase truck. Why? There was no way he was going to get around them.
So what's the point of passing me on a rather tricky 2 lane road and get no real net gain? I don't understand the point.

My pet peeve is when I'm driving on the interstate with my cruise control on and I keep having to pass the same vehicle over and over only to have them pass me again a few minutes later. I'm going the same speed the whole time a-hole.

It usually seems stupid and pointless but sometimes on the interstate for a long drive I’ll do it to amuse myself as the turds clogging the left lane freak out and accelerate to tighten up their turtle march.

There's a ton of people that have absolutely 0 situational awareness and don't look ahead of them on the road more then about 100 yards.
The amount of idiots that floor it for a green light only to slam on the breaks in 100 yards because the next light is red with 10 cars deep stopped already gets me also.
People just drive and don't look in front of them at all.

Ticketing them isn’t enough. They need to be jailed.
