These guys talking about 4:14 miles as the minimum standard for a fast mile are all former collegiate runners still in their early thirties, so it is all relative.
I understand this. And I do see these types at races around Houston. shite, I've seen people running 5:20 miles in a 10k run at the end of a triathlon. But that's not normal. I would expect to see a handful. And I realize this is the OT, but there aren't that many who used to be able to run that fast. Seems like every 3rd post is a guy who broke 5 minutes.

Mile: 4:58
5K: 16:30
10K: 33:46
All 3 years ago. I have zero top end speed so I'm best from 10k up. I wont touch those times again though.

Why run when you can just walk? Was someone chasing you with a machete or something?

I absolutely don't believe there are that many people sniffing 5 minute miles.
Most high school distance runners break 5 minutes with decent dedication and a little talent. I ran a bunch of mile runs in the 4:40s and was well behind the top group. This was early 80s NOLA catholic district. I'm sure every district has several guys running that fast every year.

Senior year of High School, at 17, I broke the school record for the 800 meter with a time of 2:02.1
I also helped break records in the sprint medely, distance medely, and 4x400 that year, but those were all relays and weren't as important to me so I don't remember the times.
Around the same time I ran the one mile at ~4:30, two mile was ~10:30 and my 5k was 17:30, but I have doubts the course was a full 3.1 miles.
More recently, at ~26, I have run 5ks in 18:30, 10k ~39:00, 15k ~59:30, half marathons in 1:29:30 and a beer mile a couple years ago at ~7:00.

5:35 @ 17
20:23 @18
Haven't ventured past 5k, but will probably do a leisurely 10k in the near future.

5k- don't know if I ever ran a 5k, HS was 3 mile and in college I was a miler. Fastest 3 mile split during a cross country race in college was 13:45.
10k- 27:01 (cross country)
Both when I was 18.

About a 5:40 mile in high school (16-18), low 18 min 3 miles in the military (18-22) had ankle surgeries, and at 10 yrs in military I was running 24-25 on 3 miles. (22-29).
Can't remember best but that's a lot of running over 12+ yrs

These 4:14 times were brought up in response to a poster stating a 4:34 mile would put you on the radar for a college scholarship. 4:15 is more of the bench mark for college scholly. Even a 4:15 wouldn't get you much interest from big schools.

I was proud of my letter from Millsaps with a :52 400, 5:00 mile, 16:56 3 mile. Not that they could give out scholarships, nor would anyone want to run for them

I can't speak to how many there are but i can tell you that in 20+ years in the Army, i was never in a unit that didn't have a couple dudes running sub 12 on the 2 mile APFT.
So. Sub 6 for 1 mile really isn't that uncommon. It isn't the norm, but its not uncommon

Yep just like I said too about the Marine Corps. To run an 18 minute 3 miles you have to be under 6 on at least 1 mile of it and not just seconds
