A 'thermal blanket' and a thinner comforter would allow you more customization of your bedding's thermal insulative properties.

We use one in cooler months. It's soft and velvety. We call it "extra blanket".

My matelasse goes on top like a bedspread. It is fairly ornate in design.

I always thought you had the mattress sheet, then the bed sheet and then the comforter. Who wants the comforter next to their skin?

If you live somewhere that it actually gets cold, you usually have a blanket between the top sheet and comforter during the winter months.
