If you had to posit an armchair theory for why Southerners are bigger litterers than the rest of the country, what would be your theory?

My first trip to France was in the Alsace region. No litter, no graffiti. Postcard perfect. Next trip was near Marseille. Litter and graffiti everywhere. I think people in the south of all countries are just trashier.

1968 Part of a summer in Europe included a week in Berlin.

And we also went individually into east Berlin.
1st surprise was the East German guards were whistling the same tune as West Germans (Kaiser Bill's Batman)

Second: the few bicycles in the shop windows has the least substantial light brown rubber tires I've ever seen.

Third: Dinner in the Rathskeller, the posh restaurant under the German City Hall that was in the Russian sector. Maitre de brings out a huge four page menu with all sorts of interesting dishes. When we placed our order , THEN he told us which three dishes were available that evening.

Totally nude dancers in every town in the mid-west (IL) - back in 1994 when I was young and horny.

Always thought of LA as party central and the mid west as Bible Belt.

Pasties and g strings most places here.

You asked for an eye opener.

Car insurance was cheap as frick up there too. Good hunting, but couldn’t wait to move back home - too fricking cold with no mountains, ugly women, and bland food.

Driving into old Mexico from Laredo in the late 90's and seeing real poverty in the shanty towns. And realizing how incredibly lucky we are.

I was in Kenya for a while, there was no welfare system, or other social programs, the result was large areas of shanty towns, beggars everywhere, tons of petty crime, and significant violent crime. People that say the US should shut off welfare need to pay a visit to some of these countries and see what happens when that is not available.

No kidding. Try doing international business with Indians. If I’m in a jungle with two bullets in my pistol and a cobra and an Indian are next to each other on the trail I’m walking down I’m shooting the Indian twice.

A few things come to mind.

Tallulah, LA…we drive 30 minutes out of the way on the way to the beach to go through. It’s humbling/sad.

Level of poverty in Afghanistan.

How crappy gas stations are in Mississippi

Walmarts not in NWA. Ours are really nice…outside of home base…wow

How dated the buildings on Georgia’s campus are. Felt like I was walking through a 60’s movie set. How loud Sanford stadium gets. How wooded it is around the football field.

Auburn- how small of a town it is.

I’ve been in the import lumber business for over 30 years. My boss normally traveled to South America and Africa to visit with our suppliers and sawmills. In the 1990’s my boss asked me to start flying down to Brazil to inspect the South American Genuine Mahogany we were purchasing. It was eye opening when I inspected 50,000 BF of mahogany at the port and right next to it were armed thugs guarding enough cocaine to keep Miami supplied for a few months.

In this part of the state, at least, the law is barely involved in any kind of transgression, barring a homicide or vehicular infraction. Folks in Montana tend to police themselves rather than get the state involved.

A few weeks ago, there was a young man who had been determined to have been selling heroin in town. Rather than report it to any authorities, some people who I do not know at all decided to corral this individual at a local bar, kick the living dogshit out of him, and inform him that he was not welcome.

Haven't seen him since.

Europe
How nobody drinks ice with their water or any drink period.
So many people smoke - including teenagers

How they look at work and work life balance is completely different here in the US.

Similar experience with Miami. We went down to the 2012 Orange Bowl and the neighborhood near the stadium looked like something out of the movie Friday. Similar experience with Cleveland, Richmond and Detroit. It was like visiting a different world

Growing up in WV, we didn't lock doors or windows either, but everyone knew their neighbors.

Another for me was how rude people were in some areas, especially cities.

Not true.

My Grandmaw house didnt have AC till the 90s, we slept with the windows open and an attic fan. She also never locked her door. We would walk in her house and there was a bote on the counter..... "going get my hair done". She never locked her doors.

It's amazing that people do this shite. From cigarette butts, to diapers to whatever you can think of, you will see it on the side of the road in LA. I just don't understand it. I would vote for a candidate for governor if his sole platform was to clean up the state literally and figuratively.

I used to think that North America was so overcrowded until I drove from Phoenix to Las Vegas and saw 1000's of empty acreage.

When I first arrived in BR and got to the neighborhood I was to live in, noticed there were far more carports than garages, and more boil pots than grills in backyards.
