Well that settles it. Your little trip and anecdotes are all we need.

Tucson has more garbage on the side of the roads than anything I ever saw in LA.

After numerous trips to China, Europe and Latin America, I am convinced most of us from the USA have no earthly idea how good we have it.

why do they have bars on their windows, is it for hurricanes?"
I was then advised that the bars on the windows were there to keep criminals out.

So the bars were for the Hurricanes?

Decades ago when I first went to Europe I noticed no pick-up trucks.

The bank in Jackson Hole was just a trailer, back in the 70s. It had a vault, but it was just a walk in safe plugged into the wall.

One night, someone came by with chains, and just dragged it off.

Flimsy construction, very little planning, everything seems ad hoc. In Europe there are buildings that have stood for a thousand years. Here, buildings barely seem to make it 50 years. Little wood frame houses here, sagging and in disrepair compared to stone structures in Europe. Strip malls and crazy signage that just looks trashy like Veterans, Airline, etc...

I agree with this. Not many people seem to want to leave anything behind here in America, which to each his own, but it’s just odd.

Subdivisions going from desirable upper middle class to total dumps in 20 years.

The strip mall thing. Started out a great convenient concept, a lot of small businesses in a centralized location, those businesses move out, 95% of the time, the replacements are a step down, and so on and so forth, until it’s vacant.

If the USA had been around then, we would have building still standing today.

Then why don't we have 250 year old buildings everywhere? Why do we tear down high-rises built in the 60s and replace them with high-rises that won't be around another 50 years?

Construction is virtually the same today wherever you go.

I'm talking about civilized countries, not Haiti or Mexico. I just haven't seen the cheap shite in France, Germany or England near as much as here. Also, not just the cheap/temporariness, but also the lack of planning and zoning makes shite look more ad hoc.

The OP asked about biggest eye-openers for ME. I'm merely sharing my personal observations. But if you feel more comfortable telling me that I didn't observe my personal observations, more power to you.

shite here just looks more third world to me, personally.

What's your problem? I'm merely sharing my observations as per the OP's request. Why don't you stick to your own fricking observations?

My "little trip" includes France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Holland, Belgium, England, Ireland, Japan, Australia, all over a period of 35 years, some multiple times, some countries for months at a time.

visiting another state/country
First trip across the border at McAllen, TX was stupefying for a 15 year old FCP. The stark difference between each side's economy was right there: Regular homes on one side, lean-to shanties on the other.

Agreed, and everything here seems to be designed around automobiles, not actual people. The effect is to have everything spread out and parking lots everywhere.

Traveling on trains and subways. In the US there are many that are blasting music, watching videos and talking on phones during the ride. In Europe they sit quietly and are courteous to others.
