Drivers side seatbelt would not longer catch so I took it apart and for whatever reason when I took the ball bearing out it began to catch again. Who knew you could take a part out of the seatbelt to make it work!

My dad did that once in his old work Truck. Was hilarious.

When the a/c went out on my rape van.

This reminds me of a picture a friend of mine sent me a while back when he was in Texas.

I worked on a rice farm. We had an old bobtail truck that didn't like to start, so we ran a piece of hose through the dash into the carburator with a bolt stuck in the end of it.
You would spray some ether in, blow as hard as you could for 1-2 seconds, plug up the hole, hit the clutch and turn the key. Sometimes a second application was required to keep it running.

The truck also had no brakes. I don't mean its brakes worked poorly. I mean they didn't work at all. We didn't find that particularly important enough to rig, apparently. I've never been more scared in my life than loaded down with rice in that thing coming up on a stop sign getting onto a highway (not busy, but rural and a speed limit of 55mph) and hoping there wasn't a car coming and if there was that I had enough room to roll to a stop without having to tear up the transmission to stop.


Dad (not the farmer, by the way) had a push mower that had the engage switch bar break. He got a small piece of metal (probably aluminum if memory serves) and curled it around the actual mechanism on the deck. He taught ~10 year old me to stick my hand down near the exhaust on the deck to manually disengage the safety, hook the little piece of metal onto part of the frame of the mower, and then turn it off by doing the opposite. Mowed grass like that for at least a few years.

I think those two top the list. I am also pretty good at rigging a heater core bypass in older model cars.
