I had a very stable job making decent money in BR and was offered something in Pensacola making more money and also the potential to make way more and gain ownership in a business. It was a cluster from the get go (was basically sold a bill of goods) and was lucky enough to get my old job back in BR. I am now making a very good salary. The moral of the story...grass isn't always greener on the other side.
That being said, my wife and I hope to move to North Alabama (or somewhere around there) and buy some land and a micro house in about 5-7 years. We are ready to get out of the rat race.
A final note, just because life is "easy" right now, just give it a few years....everyone deals with tough times at some point.

Karmapolice.. I moved to LA, Portland, NYC, SF, Sydney, St.Petersburg, Russia, Memphis, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, New Smyrna Beach, San Jose and New Orleans.
I hated Portland in 2007
portland is a wonderful place to vacation. i need a little more bustle though for now. great eats, great brews, friendly people.
we were talking about liberal cities though. portland is amongst the most liberal i've ever spent a lot of time.

Interesting spin. I guess it's still better than vivid ink and Chelsea's though.
can barely remember that life existed.

It would be very reckless to leave the security I have right now for so many risky/expensive endeavors, but at the same time, you only live one life, and you are only young once. I don't want to totally frick my future up, but I also don't want to live with regrets or feel like I didn't take advantage of the limitless opportunities in life.
I hear where you're coming from. Honestly, you may be able to have fun without sabotaging your career-get 1-3 years of experience and money under your belt, then take off and go exploring. You'll still be in your 20's and young, and you could still return to a career or graduate school when you get done traveling (if you choose to do so).
Working to get there won't be that bad- you can save your money and loosely plan your awesome travel experience.

all the reasons you listed were money related.
what's wrong with living somewhere because it's cheap?

Put career in real estate on hold to work in ministry. Best decision I've ever made.

He said money wasn't the reason.
And there is a reason it is cheap.

Planning on going on a very LONG hike somewhere. Haven't decided on the location yet.

One easy change is to NOT LIVE IN THE STUPID SUBURBS. If you live in a major city the social, career, fitness, cultural and volunteerism opportunities are quite literally endless, and are steps from your door.
It really boils down to different strokes for different folks. I would literally kill myself if I lived in a big city. I live in the country outside Nashville and love that I can go outside at night and hear nothing but the wind, look up at the stars and have peace. I love that I can go to one of the three surrounding lakes or go enjoy some of the beautiful landscapes that Tennessee has to offer. I enjoy places like NYC, but I would feel imprisoned if I lived there.
A quick 20 minute drive and I can experience anything that Nashville has to offer. I lived in downtown Nashville a couple years ago(right on 2nd ave.) and it was miserable.
So, because someone doesn't live in the city that doesn't mean it's for money reasons. That's a stupid fricking stance.

Great to see you posting. I haven't seen you around for awhile but I might just have missed. Where are you living these days? Playing music?
Should have read the whole thread. What are you doing in Berlin?

I big leagued a full-bird colonel while I was in sanitized DCU's in country.
"That's a force protection issue, Sir. Stay in your lane..."

Quit my oilfield job and started my own LLC consulting firm at a very young age. Only been at it less than a month so only time will tell if it was a good move

A fellow once insisted I take him for a drive one night as I left my office. At gunpoint.
While sitting in the driver's seat, my back seat passenger - a 16 years young African American gentlemen - had the cold, blued, barrel of the pistol pressed firmly against the back of my head, and he gave me the instruction to put my hands behind my head, as he was going to tie my hands up. I felt both of his hands on mine, and when I did, the Lord God Almighty gave me the mental wherewithal to realize that he couldn't be holding that pistol if I could feel both of his hands. I could feel his hot breath on my hands. It was cold that February 13th. With no thought - pure reaction - I thrust my hands back, apparently jabbing at least one of his eyes with my fingers, and bolted out of the Ford Expedition, running away in a zig zag pattern. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't being chased or shot at. I put about 75 yards between me and the young entrepreneur - as quickly as a not so fleet, 30 something white man in boots could muster - before I turned around to see him finally get out. Turns out, the child locks were on.

He was probably just scared walking through a white neighborhood and wanted to get out.

About two years ago, I had an accidental fall at a major hotel chain which resulted in a debilitating leg injury. I endured 7 surgeries in 13 days and was in the hospital for two months. After that I had to live in a nursing home for 10 1/2 months while undergoing physical therapy and wound treatment. I lost my job and home from financial ruin. I literally wanted to die.
Eventually,I sent a demand letter to the hotel chain which resulted in a sizeable settlement offer. I refused the offer because their negligence had destroyed my life. Turning down the offer was a major risk that could have had dire results. I hired an attorney who eventually forced a dramatically larger settlement.
