i'll be honest. one day i totally hope to be able to go to one of my kid's sport league/dance recitals. that seems awesome.
but hopefully. i'll live somewhere i can avoid the shitty chain restaurants.

I'm assuming from this anecdote and from your avatar that you're a libertarian/conservative with great taste in art, film, etc. I'd say that even if there is a smaller percentage of people with your political leanings, when you do find them you'll have that much stronger of a connection and bond.
It may be working out like that. It's been odd, because I regularly find folks who align with me in lots of ways, they're just a little bit off and it keeps us from the bonds I have with my college and law school friends.
But then again, there are a lot more conservatives in the suburbs who share my lack of political correctness and whatnot, but they're less likely to share my citified libertarian and academic leanings.

that's one thing that can't be replaced so quickly. after moving, i found lots of like minded people. but you don't have the same personal bond and investment from having known them for a long time. having gone through things with them. helped each other out. a lot of that took a lot of effort and development.

Not to sound lame, but not being able to replicate the bonds of my college/fraternity buddies was tough. I have plenty of friends, but that's a different thing. Especially if you're on to a new hobby or interest every month like I am. Took a while for me to find some folks who are the "I've never heard of it, but frick it, we'll do it this weekend" type.

I bluffed my employer into giving me a 30% pay increase on the basis of a fake offer for a new job from a buddy of mine. Sort of like how Les does every couple of years. It felt good though. They had no choice but to match.

i don't think it's lame at all.
how could you replace that quickly or even at all? impossible.

california is one of the most amazing places in the world . find a place to be. find a job there/save enough money. go live. know that if you have to you can move back.
i'll never regret the four years i spent in socal.

The ballsiest move that I've done was taking a job in a new career path, about 3 years ago. At first there was a good amount of travel (first year probably gone 20 weeks), but the pay increase was roughly 40 percent, and I felt that it was worth it. I've since stayed on the same path and have been promoted twice, while not having to travel much at all.
Eventually, I may step outside of the box more and start my own business, but until then I'm happy where I'm at.

California sounds awesome. As does much of the Western US. I have a job in atlanta. Just graduated college, got two weeks off, then started working.
What I really wanted was like 6 months off. There are so many things I want to do. I've never traveled. Never been on a big hiking trip, a ski trip, never been to Europe. Never been free/independent. On top of that, there's a girl I dated for a few months this past spring/summer that I really like who moved to New York after graduation and I just don't like the fact that I'll probably never do anything about that.
It would be very reckless to leave the security I have right now for so many risky/expensive endeavors, but at the same time, you only live one life, and you are only young once. I don't want to totally frick my future up, but I also don't want to live with regrets or feel like I didn't take advantage of the limitless opportunities in life.

soooo take it. or go for it. which is more likely at 88? regretting missing out on an amazing girl or regretting leaving a desk job in atlanta? which makes a better story to tell yourself later?

why? you think it gets easier to leave comfort later? you think chasing what you actually want to do gets easier when you have a house wife or kids?

impossible unless you get into drugs/alcohol or get arrested. i'm not saying party and frick off. but find out what you're passionate about and then pursue it with the fire of a thousand suns.
and if it's a girl, then that makes for a great story later. whether it's wrong or right.
and if you fail, you can always go home and rebuild. nurse your wounds. then try it again.

Not telling you not to do something major.
That said, if you're single and getting by ok financially, there is a ton you can do without giving it all up. Spend the next year exploring the wilds of North Georgia. Beyond that, go to GSMNP and kayak the lake to the backcountry. Go to the Roan Highlands. Explore Linville Gorge. Camp on Cumberland Island. Take weekend trips to NYC to see the girl. Look for cheap flights out of ATL to the Caribbean and Puerto Rico and anywhere else. Go to those places and stay in shite hole accommodations. Take weekend trips out west.
I'm 30, and I don't necessarily regret not backpacking Europe or taking 6 months to do something else. But I do regret not doing more of the stuff that is easily accessible to me. And keep an eye out. If an opportunity comes to go live in NYC or spend 6 months in New Zealand or something, jump at it.
