University of Iowa/Iowa City has a great cancer treatment center, as well as the Children’s Hospital and the university hospital. My former ortho completed his residency there.

lived in Des Moines for 3 years. It's awesome. The people are extremely friendly (but not touchy-feely like the south). The wide open spaces and rolling hills are pretty. Winters are very cold, but it's not that bad. Hunting is great. They also have Kum and Go. Eta: Des Moines has some great restaurants The meat quality in the grocery is excellent.
The country folks are frugal, drive old tractors and old trucks, wear old clothes, live in old houses and put there farm money in big old bank accounts (not all of em but many)
Never spent time in the cities.
And if they drink…they drink a lot.

Play golf with a retired guy who chose to move to Arkansas from Iowa from just driving thru to Texas.
He said he hated the weather.
Hasn't been fond of the 100 degree days last couple years either
Most outsiders eventually move back to where they came or a more temworate climate than the deep south/Texas. The heat does it to them.

Nice enough if you avoid the cities

My son graduated from ISU in 2020. We loved visiting several times a year while he was in Ames. Good, welcoming, nice folks. Only Courtyard I have ever stayed in where they didnt have 2 queen beds in a room ( all booked up), so they gave us 2 separate king rooms and 4 free drink coupons. Iowa nice is a thing!

Good lord, that means they weren't at full occupancy to get you an additional room.

So Iowa is way colder than Kansas?

I spent a summer in southern Minnesota and it was a totally different mindset and a lot of fun.
The roads are flat, gravel and laser straight and the run them at max speed. There were pig roasts and keggers every weekend. Several had jacked up trucks and would go mud bogging with them. And there seemed to be good money in farming because they all had newer trucks too.

I would say it’s colder, but not way colder. It’s colder than central MO.

I heard that it's pretty cold in the Winter.

Significantly. For much longer and with much more snow.
