Spent a couple of days in Cedar Rapids a few years ago during the summer driving cross country. It was pretty awful. Was small and felt rundown. Locals seemed understandably subdued.

It was my only experience in Iowa and it made me never want to go back. Reading this thread makes me think we picked the wrong town to check out during our roadtrip. Should have gone to Des Moines instead.

Mostly yes, not “warm” though.

Wholesome food yes - like meat and potato stuff. Not a wide variety.

It is a good family raising place with cold, dark winters.

When I had my corporate job in Houston, we had a plant in a mid-sized Iowa town. In the town’s history, there has been only one AA family, a PhD that came in to do some research, left after 3 years.

My contact there had to take his 5 year old son to the Mall of America to let him realize there were other races. He said his son couldn’t quit pointing and saying “look Daddy”.

The Des Moines farmers market is the best I’ve ever been to.

Hope this helps

I've been to Des Moines twice for work. It's a nice little city. Nothing special. Boring and quaint compared to where I'm from.

Yall sure do hate black people to live and take so much pride in a state that is third black and heavily influenced by traditional black culture. Pretty weird

If you like flat and country ag feeling then it seems pretty pleasant

It’s not flat at all. Beautiful rolling hills unlike Louisiana.

I used to live there as a kid and loved it. Not much culture, but they have real seasons, everything is pretty clean, newish, taken care of, low crime, food is not great- a lot of “park food” type cuisine. Beautiful open fields and nice houses for cheap. That’s about it.

From what I can tell, the food is probably a bit bland.

Besides that, it may not be a bad place, as long as you enjoy shoveling snow want to be a full days drive away from any beach, and enjoy driving through 100 or more different corn fields in between every town.

The women are probably not bad looking, but it may be hard to gauge when you first meet her because she will be wearing multiple layers, a heavy snow jacket, and a stocking hat/ear mutfs/ski mask.

What accent? I’ve never heard of Iowa having a specific accent. You are thinking of Wisconsin and Michigan

Not until just now did I realize there was anybody who thought that there's not a midwest accent in Iowa.

I dated a girl from Iowa once and she liked living there. Country as hell but close enough to Lake Charles to get anyything she needs. She was nice but the 2 hour drive from BR was just too much for me so I ended it. There's a good sausage company from there called Rabideaux's. They make a damn good smoked sausage. It's very smoky and it's great in a gumbo.

I’ve been to Pella for work. Neat town. I find the Midwest to be underrated.
