That sounds nice. How’s the economic outlook? Is the medical field solid?

Yes. I was there for podiatry school. There are some great hospitals in Des Moines and West Moines/Ankeny.

There are several corporate headquarters there. I imagine West Des Moines has its share of visa holders just because of the more recent expansion.

The accent wouldn't be a dealbreaker, but having to hear it everyday would get old quick.

What accent? I’ve never heard of Iowa having a specific accent. You are thinking of Wisconsin and Michigan

I lived in Cedar Rapids for a year back in the mid 90’s. Got transferred there with my job. It was a complete culture shock. Meat quality was excellent, but all the food there was bland. The winter was brutal and it seemed to last forever. A lot of snow and ice and it was impossible to keep your car clean. Memorial Day weekend temperatures were in the 40s. And yes, the people sounded like super nerds with those accents. The summer was actually pleasant but with no family or friends there, I hated it. Couldn’t wait to get back to Louisiana. That was the first time ever I had seen mixed race couples.

Take it from me, if you’re from the south, you probably won’t like Iowa.

I used to work for a company HQ'd there, I was in and out frequently. The people are nice, very staid, a joke that would go over in NO-BR would be a frowned upon in Iowa. The restaurants are ok, but not a highlight.

Crime is very low, so that is a huge plus. I was offered a promotion, but I would have had to move to Des Moines, I passed, but there were a lot of other factors. Farming is very important to them.

It depends on how well you adapt.

I have legitimately never heard anyone who would actually know say anything butt good about Iowa. Iowa is one of those places thst has an image problem. Nobody aspires to move there, but no one who has lived there has anything bad to say about it either!
