We found the same thing, TJG. Ironically, the same ACT.

Decided that it was a situation that opened the door for more options for my kid.

We'll see if the leadership and population of LA attracts her back when she's done with school. Options.

LSU will give tops which essentially cuts out tuition. Housing will cost something but so does alabama.

Not the case. TOPS, even for the highest achievers covers only 70% of 2016 tuition. JBE saw to that with the budget issues, and froze the TOPS award levels, while LSU costs keep going up.
There are very few full LSU Schollys for in state students, namely the Stamps Award, and the President's Alumni Award, of which only 10 are awarded. Most of these awards go to out of state and international students, usually with lower qualifications than the in state applicants.

Alabama on the other hand offers full tuition, waives out of state for a 32 ACT for 5 years. If you score higher than that, they also throw in housing for four years.
Add National Merit Semi-Finalist plus Finalist, and you also get an additional $3500 which can go towards Board.

How do I know this, my son is attending Alabama in the fall with this package. Would have been 4th Generation Tiger, but LSU could not even come close. The best they could do was TOPS, plus a few small $500-$1000 scholarships though your respective college discipline offerings.

So, he can attend Alabama for free, and all I have to pay for is about half of the Food program, or LSU where I would pay 30% tuition, plus Room & Board.
Given those choices, Roll Damn Tide!

Maybe one day we can get our shite together, but until we can straighten out the budget, it ain't happening.

BTW, every year 30+ kids from the New Orleans area Catholic schools, boys and girls, take this deal at Alabama and go for free.

Yep. I've heard it over and over from friends.

Quick question, Ole Miss used to be a big landing spot for kids in this area. Why did Ole Miss stop being the go to and why is it that Alabama has so much more to offer these days?

A good friend of mine has a kid going to UA-Huntsville because of this. Had over 30 on ACT and LSU gave him nothing. UAH gave him a free ride. Easy decision.

It still is.
My guess is between Jesuit, BM, Mount Carmel and Dominican, there are probably 14-16 going to Ole Miss.

If he’s doing engineering UAH is a great school. With the Arsenal in Huntsville there are also lots of interning and real jobs available.

What’s he studying? I’ve never met a scientist/engineer from Alabama (Tuscaloosa campus) worth a shite.

In Louisiana?

That occurs in other states, but not LA.

You know fees alone (which is not covered by Standard TOPS) are $2k per semester?

I’ve heard from more than one person recently that LSU has been super stingy with scholarships for deserving students. Spoke to someone yesterday who had a 32 ACT and they only offered a measly few bucks. Meanwhile Alabama is giving out money like its growing on trees.

If they're in-state...there's not much more to offer the student.

Out of state a 32 ACT + decent GPA should still get the student the in-state tuition rate + a little bit more.

8-10 are going to Bama each year from Jesuit alone, all in the top 15-20% of the class. About 60 go to LSU a year, many into the honors college, so LSU is still attracting a lot of smart kids. Just not the highest achievers.

For sure, it is just a shame because so many are leaving that deserve to go to LSU, but have to choose an out of state school because of the economics.

They have been like that for some time. When I went there, admittedly in the 80's, I used to get cash money back when I registered (which I usually then spent on books). I have two smart kids. One went to LSU and one went to Tulane. It costs us more to put the one through LSU than it did the one through Tulane, because of all the aid at Tulane and the lack of it at LSU.

This is dead on. Other schools don’t just waive tuition for high achievers, they add money for room and board if national merit semifinalist/finalist and students do very well on ACT/SAT (33-36). If it was just some tuition left I could see pushing my kid to LSU because of family ties but when you consider fees, room & board, etc a Louisiana kid is paying maybe $10,000 a year to attend LSU when they could go to comparable or better out of state school for free.

Go wash your mouth with soap.

Apparently Alabama does the same thing to Alabama kids that LSU does to LA kids. Stingy on scholarships to in state but rolls out the red carpet to out of state and international. I don’t get it.
