Quick question, Ole Miss used to be a big landing spot for kids in this area. Why did Ole Miss stop being the go to and why is it that Alabama has so much more to offer these days?

Alabama is a better school than Ole Miss and offers basically the same social stuff I think.

Eight years of annual budget cuts under Jindal. The funding didn't stabilize until Edwards was elected, but since then it hasn't been anywhere near restored to where it was before.

My daughter had a 35 ACT, national merit scholar, etc, and would have gone to LSU only if she was offered a Stamps Scholarship. She wasn't. Her best offer was out of state with almost all tuition covered by scholarships. We pay room and board and like $3,000 toward private university tuition.

LSU just doesn't (and hasn't) have the funding to compete in that way.

No it isn’t.

Alabama is worse than LSU

And fwiw, LSU offers kids from out of state the same scholarships that Alabama and others offer to lure kids with high scores

Remember how when the subject of football budget comes up, somebody always says that having a successful program attracts students?

Welcome to the other side of the coin. Why should the National Champeens offer cut rates?

Why is LSU giving out scholarships if they have TOPS? Are you talking about like room and board awards?

Any kid that gets a 34 on the ACT can figure out pretty quickly that TOPS does not even cover in-state tuition and fees and therefore leaves nothing for other expenses. Not bashing LSU. I am a proud grad but hate to see it just can’t compete with other schools for top academic kids.

I would be curious to see which other flagship (or equivalent) universities have the same political, budget, and funding issues that LSU faces.

Why does a state with LA's size and population need so many pubclic (redundant) universities? It seems like a different approach (e.g. Georgia's consolidation) could provide more funding to LSU for scholarships.

Here is an article from a few years back that discusses it.

SEC schools take pride in pulling kids out of other SEC schools backyards.

That’s a fact.

Spoke to someone yesterday who had a 32 ACT and they only offered a measly few bucks.

But what was their 40 time?

Actually, according to USNews,

LSU is #153 (tie)
Alabama is #153 (tie)
Arkansas is #153 (tie)
Ole Miss is #162

None of them are getting confused for an Ivy League school.

LSU not giving out scholarships to qualified students went on pre-TOPS too. I graduated from high school in Louisiana before TOPS existed. I had a very good ACT score and GPA and graduated with honors but got zero academic offers from any Louisiana colleges, not just LSU. I remember asking some school officials why I didn't get any scholarship offers and I was flat out told it was because I was white and my parents made too much money. True story (I grew up very much middle class btw).
