Never. Seriously.

As someone who works in the ER, this is the correct answer. So much dumb crap happens with ATVs. It sucks to have to tell parents that their 4 year old is going to lose his thumb because they weren’t watching him fiddle with the strap on the back of the ATV.

No kidding. I am reading these replies and thinking my god what a bunch of fricking pussies. Did none of the pussies have a dirt bike or quad as a kid? Where in the hell did y'all grow up?

For real Isn't this the south? I feel like this is oppisite day. I am the least redneck of the people I know and work with. I had an atv 11- on and would buy my 7yo daughter a little one.

Twin boys....
Suzuki 50 4-wheelers for their their 3rd birthday.
Honda 50 dirt bikes for their 4th birthday.
One twin who rode more got a ktm for his 6th birthday.
Suzuki 90 4-wheelers for their 7th birthday.

We just sold their little bikes and now they are each on Honda ranchers. They will be 9 in December. Always wore a helmet and we always watch them ride.

Depends on how trashy you are. It's a sliding scale.

A senior at my high school died in an ATV incident. They would go to this wooded area that was being cleared out for a subdivision riding the hills that the crews were forming. Kid went to drive over a hill that they had passed over the last time they were out there, but apparently the crews had dug out the other side. He went over the edge and the ATV fell on him, crushing his skull. The other kids had to basically hold his brains in to get him to the ambulance. Just a few weeks shy of graduation.

I’d say around the same age as you’d give a kid a gun.

Naw. I got my first gun at 6 years old.

Didn't get an ATV till I was 13. Got a dirt bike Honda xr 200 at 12. Had a go kart when I was 9.

I'm 32 and last year I almost killed myself on one but for blind luck.

But growing up my parents refused to get me one.

Let that be a lesson.

yeah, that lesson is if your parents had let you develop some skills instead of being overprotective you might not be such a retarded pussy at 32.

If you are a snowflake parent or have a snowflake child, wait a few years until they have an ATV that drives itself. If you are willing to teach your child how to operate, maintain and fix a vehicle, then about 5-6 years old should be fine. My crumb-cruncher got a jr-50 with training wheels @ age 5.

Start them out on a 50 at 6. You can govern them down to 5 mph and let them learn from there. Always make them wear a helmet and don’t let them let another kid ride with them.

This is the best advice. It's safe and by the time they're in their teens they will be able to safely handle a 400cc or larger bike

ATVs are adult toys. Let him buy his own when he grows up.

No shite. All those years growing up going on 4 wheeler rides with over 100 bikes and I saw 1 major accident that seriously injured a kid. And that was on a side by side Polaris ranger where he hit a tree and put his arms on the dashboard to stop himself and the force snapped both arms

I’m amazed at the amount of people in here who know nothing about ATVs

Seriously though, it’s like they just see headlines of people getting hurt all the time so they use that to form their own opinion.. I believe a child having an ATV can be a great thing, provided the parents are responsible enough to teach their children how to be safe while riding...

Start them all off in the little electric jobs when they were toddlers and scaled up with them. Our kids grew up/are growing up with 4 wheelers as part of their daily lives living on a big farm and all.

But they also have grown up with a swimming pool, and the same basic concept of safety first applies. My kids are the nerds who have to wear a helmet when riding 4 wheelers and can't swim unless there are adults present.
