re: What's a better commuter sedan: Camry or Accord?

I see you want to drive it into the ground, but I looked at Accord vs Camry vs Altima in the past and ended up with a Mazda 6.
My reasons:
- design looked way better
- drove better
- the rental fleet of Camrys (and Altimas) potentially hurts resale down the road
- I really like the Accords but in ‘21 there was some weird issue where the digital speedometers would only display kmH, and having to look at the off-center meter was a deal breaker.

If you live near I-10 and want to haul arse, may I suggest a clapped out Altima with a piece of bumper flapping in the wind, or a Dodge Charger with heavy tint?

Yeah but the Camry is grounded to the ground!

The one with the best price. Are either available without a CVT? I'd get that one.
I greatly prefer a stick shift, is that offered on any of them anymore?

Honda is a turbo 4 with a CVT.
Camry comes only with a 4 cylinder hybrid setup now I think.
I'd go with the Camry. I wish you could get it with a regular four cylinder without the hybrid, but alas...
...the real answer is to get a Mazda 3. With a regular four cylinder and a traditional automatic.

I get it. Haven't heard that one in a while.

No. But you can get either a traditional automatic or a 6 speed in a Mazda 3. I would suggest the 6 but they stopped making that. I've had one for almost 10 years with a 6 speed that has been absolutely flawless.

That's what I'd get then. Whoever has a stickshift on the market is always my lead choices for a commuter car.

Nissan has ruined the perception of the CVT. Toyota has had a CVT in the Prius since its inception (over 25 years) and it is solid. The powertrain in the Prius is as reliable as pretty much anything on the road, especially recently.

Basically, the same reliable car. Just pick whichever you can get a better deal on.
Exactly this

Camry. Honda isn’t what it was the last time you purchased a car.

I had a 2023 Honda accord hybrid sport. Great gas mileage, smooth ride and plenty power. However, I got rid of it because it kept throwing a check engine light and reducing power. Brought it in and they updated the software. After another 6K it did it again. Happened both times on the Causeway and believe me reduced power at rush hour on that bridge is a white knuckle drive. Traded on Lexus ES 300 hybrid. approaching 20K miles and it has been perfect. It actually gets better MPG than the accord. Average 49 mpg vs 47 with the accord. Just my experience with one accord. I have had many Hondas over the years and had good service from them.

I’ve never owned a Camry, but I’ve had a Corolla (and a Sequoia and a Highlander) and two Accords. The Toyotas have been more reliable for me.
Hasn’t Honda dropped in reliability ratings recently?

It did as a company but has gotten back very recently. As an aside Consumer Reports has Subaru above both Lexus and Toyota as a company with Honda 4th. The Subaru jump is a paradigm shift.

My wife has a subaru and I'm not super impressed. It's a cool car but it has had a couple of issues, all within warranty so far. Too much nanny shite on it and I cant imagine all that garbage will survive the years. Super capable vehicle though. It's been great to have this week.

Lots of makes & models have CVT's. Nissan is the only one that couldn't get it right.

The anecdotal monster gets us all, it is particularly fearsome when it comes to large purchases like cars. I read industry news almost daily and I am still infected by my own experience. It is a strong urge, it is how all our forefathers lived to procreate along with a healthy does of blind luck.
