What You Wish You Knew Before Having Kids

So my wife and I unfortunately don’t have any children of our own yet, although we would like to. We’re both in our mid-thirties, so we know we don’t have a whole lot of time left to make it happen.
My question today is for the parents of the OT. What are some things you wish you had known before having kids? Before you became a parent, did you have this certain notion of parenthood that you found out later was the complete opposite of what you expected?
I just would like to hear the doses of reality of what it means to be a parent, so if I ever do become one, I’ll know exactly what I can expect.

Don’t be so worried about everything with the first kid. Wish I would have acted like I did with my second with my first

I was in your boat. Had my youngest at 39. My only regret is not having them sooner.

Not every moment needs to be captured via a camera
Also, you don’t have to like them all the time. Sometimes kids are real assholes. You do have to love them though.

You’re never prepared and unsolicited parental advice gets old quickly. There may not be a greater feeling of love for someone when you first meet your child.

That having children would be the most frustrating while at the same time the most rewarding thing. Keep in mind that you are raising them to leave and be on their own, not to stay. Always begin your parenting by asking, What is my end goal? You want your kids to become the kind of people that you would enjoy spending time with, not just because they are family but because they are kind, decent people you love to be around.

What do you mean by “meet”? Like the instant they pop out? Or once they start to form a personality and can actually connect with you?
A shitload of brand new parents don’t really feel that next level bond and love for the first little bit.
The first 3-6 weeks is survival mode for both you and the new baby so don’t be surprised if you don’t feel THAT love on day one.

I had kids when I was pretty young (20s). I was pretty nervous about it but I realized pretty much everyone just figures it out on the fly

You can still do whatever you want for the first few years. After that, kids make doing whatever you want, even 100x better.
*things like travel, movies or Netflix shows in your living room, outside activities, etc.

Babies and toddlers are Exhausting mentally, at least for me. If the baby won't stop crying and you are reaching your wits end, put the baby down, let it cry for a bit and go gather yourself. Shaking baby syndrome is real.

4.5 weeks in right now and things are slowly getting better.

They pretty much raise themselves now…just give them an iPad or iPhohe and they’ll figure out the rest.

Live close to parents or relatives that can babysit or take them for a little while when needed.

I never became a parent.
I doubt that I will, that's one thing of life ill never know. Seeing someone grow, doing the birthdays and talks, fishing or whatever else..
Some may say I may have missed out on the best of what life has to offer. But the things I won't miss, won't miss me.
