I don’t even understand what balancing the checkbook would mean these days. Your instantly updated mobile statement/balance is literally at your fingertips 24/7/365.

I’ve got three, and don’t even have a checkbook anymore. Never needed one for anything kid related.

Have never done this. There's always a venmo or site we can go to in order to pay for things.
I just bought a new truck and had to go to the bank to get a cashier's check for payment because I don't even think we have any checks left. If we do, they likely have an old address or something on them. It's one of the only times it's noticeable. Only use credit cards and pay them each month from the checking account. That's my way of "balancing" each month granted I'm not going through the statements with a fine toothed comb.

This, the OP must not have kids in school.
For many things the school does not take cards, and I’m not sending large amounts of cash to school.
I probably write 75 checks a year… probably 65 are to the school.
I have two young kids in school and have never written a check for it, and actually the school will not even accept a check. The county has a payment portal for everything that they require you to use.
I probably write two or three checks a month and the last time I did any real balancing was likely 2005 or 2006. The bank I use went to real time account updates around then, so it became unnecessary.

Ive had the same book of checks since 2003. The address on the checks was like 10 places ago....lol. But they work every 2 or 3 years I actually need to write a check.
Never balanced a check book before though, we always had some level of digital access.

Still write checks but don’t balance since I can check my balance any time I want

I hate people who hate on “you’re not 100% digital!!!” Folks.
I used to work at a place that took in utility payments. Everyone was so excited when you could pay online. I did it the first month and was charged a $2.50 fee. All I had to do was walk down the hall and give them a check. Now $2.50 is nothing but it’s the principle of the thing. For me I’d rather get the steps and walk to their side of the building and turn in a check. There’s nothing anti tech about that -it’s just being smart.
Now my mortgage payment company is in Los Angeles. I pay that online obviously. It would take USPS a month to mail it to them. It depends on the situation-sometimes it is better to write a check, sometimes better to pay online. Period.

Where do you live?

I haven’t balanced my checkbook since I graduated and got a real job. Not very hard to not spend more than you have. My dad would always get mad because he thought the bank would always make errors I guess. I still write about 10 checks a year. Mostly to people who do odd jobs around the house like painting and repairs.

use checks periodically for paper trail purposes. don't like to have to pay 3 or 4 percent more on card purchases.

My elderly father still writes checks for everything. The only exception is the cable bill which gets auto withdrawn out of his account every month. Last month he finally cut the cord and of course the cable co. still took his money out. I told him the one damn thing you needed a pay by check in the mail situation for the only thing you have set to auto draft.

I use a card most of the time but still write some checks.

That's two different things.
I still write checks but haven't balanced my checking account in about 25 years.

Write checks often. Never balanced a checkbook

I still write checks. And it's dividend time of the first quarter, so I deposit checks, too.

NGL I never did this. The $3 dollar opportunity cost of carrying an extra $1000 in my checking account has always been worth the peace of mind of not having a check bounce ever

Why is everyone so old?!
I have checks still from probably 2008, when I got the last set, at least 5 addresses ago. I use a spresdsheet for all expenditures, savings, and investments. That has been running since 2008 or 2009.
