I know we won't get the full effect because of our location, but we should still get something to see right?

Yea hopefully the next one I will be able to go to a viewing area in a total state. Probably pretty amazing.

I'm headed up to the Mississippi River between Missouri and Illinois for it.

Be advised the next solar eclipse in the continental US is in 30 years.

And yes, it is supposed to be a sight to see.

Both the corona and the 360 degree sunset

ETA, actually may be in luck, another one just a few years down the road.

Damn, I should go see my folks in Paducah, Ky. They are right smack dab on the max line.

If you have filters (and they're cheap, you should get one) you can see the effect but with bare eyes 90% blockage doesn't look that noticeable. The Sun is just so bright that it's hard to tell.

A full eclipse is another matter. It doesn't get completely dark but the sky does get dimmer for a couple of minutes.

I've seen two annular eclipses, the one a few years ago in Bryce Canyon N.P. and (as a kid) the one in LA back in the 80's I think. My dad was driving us along Airline Hwy. looking for the right place to stop when suddenly we saw people with telescopes strung in a line along an open field, figured we were in the right place.

The scopes of course were specially equipped with filters to do solar photography. If you were to look through one you'd go blind immediately.

If you can get your hands on welding goggles or mask that's an excellent thing to watch the eclipse with.

Unless I'm reading the map wrong, you probably won't be able to see it very well from there.

Going to try my luck getting something worthwhile at ~500mm with my Nikon D750

Hoping to get good detail on the deep corona and maybe a decent exposure of the moon face I can composite all together.

One thing that sucks is how badly even scattered cloud cover can frick up plans.

what type of filter would you need on your lens?

I'm hoping to get to SC for this one and would like to get some pics with my canon.

You want at bare minimum something that gives you 10 stops of light reduction. Something that low, I wouldn't use live view, and not take rapid fire photos, and ONLY shoot at f/22.

You want to get something more in the range of 15-20 stops for unrestricted use. If getting a filter in your size is too expensive, you can stack ND filters if you have them already to get the number you need. Unless you are going really crazy with it, vingetting won't be a problem with the focal length you will be using.

Also, be aware that the filter is ONLY for partial eclipses. You want to be stepped off for pictures in totality.

Set an alarm to warn you of the approaching horizon so you aren't looking in the viewfinder when totality begins to end.

And don't forget to smell the roses. Too many photographers forget to experience the event in trying to capture a piece of it.

I'm debating on the final details, but I think I'm only going to try for two shots: a composite mixing corona at various solar radai, and a wide angle shot showing the eclipse with a foreground element backdropped by the uniform horizon "sunset".

ETA: Stay away from infrared and alpha hydrogen spectral filters. Both are expensive, and not what you really need. Especially the hydrogen filter. You can take amazing shots with it, but you need a modified camera removing the internal infrared filter to use it
