mine was seeing a horde of pasty white, morbidly obese women (and a couple men) waddling out of the downtown high rise building where i had just started working. it was a major adjustment from the quad.

Moving out with no roommate. That was the awakening of “Oh, now I have to foot all the bills.”

Similar experience for me. I remember looking around at my coworkers and they were mostly fat, aging grumps who had given up. Cynical, outspoken, uncouth. So glad I got out of that environment.

But it’s true: most people age poorly and don’t give a shite. That’s the worst part of the adult world. Avoiding those kinds of people.

Finished my degree in the Marines and realizing it didn't matter what sort of education you have, shite always rolls down hill and it doesn't matter if you are the lowest guy or a higher up guy, you're still catching shite.

Walking into Fred's just a few weeks after graduation and feeling like a fish out of water.

Getting thrown under the bus by my boss in front of a high level client over something which I had zero control over, literally just reading statistics.

Taking my first IT job out of school, having my first real help desk day at the MSP i was working at, and taking in literally 28 cold calls that day.

I do NOT miss help desk, but it was eye opening.

Probably serving in the military, Submarine service.
Then watch young men who were drafted, sent to a war in Vietnam, "in order to save us from Communism, get spit on when the returned.
Then realizing, it they returned, they would later die from the effects of Agent Orange.

It's all for freedom. $$$$$$$$

my parents and aunts & uncles never worked in the downtown office, corporate world so i had very little frame of reference. i knew it wasn't going to be a bunch of hot, fun people like Mad Men but damn it was depressing.

I bought my first home and within a few weeks I had a homeless encampment, 50 feet from where my wife and I lay our head at night.

I could hear them having conversations and arguing while I sat in my backyard.

Salary instead of hourly.

The look on the owner’s face when I asked how I was going to get paid for overtime.

Never had it because I always had to pay my way, wasnt handed anything by my parents. Worked starting at 14. Parents worked hard and provided a decent life for me and siblings but we all had to earn it, unlike the kids who have their parents pay their way until 26 today. Worked even in college while rommates sat on porch day drinking.

Buying a used car from a neighbor and then realizing I had to go to the DMV and pay them taxes from it. Kick in the nuts
