October '96, about this time of year, I was getting a promotion at a kick arse semiconductor company. Only drawback was that it was in NEW JERSEY !

In 'Jersey, they take pride in being rude, hostile, annoying, and ignorant. My smooth cooperative southern style was a breath of fresh air to everyone.

I was living in Baton Rouge...end of junior/ start of senior year at BRHS. I was planning on going to LSU, complete ROTC and get a commission in the Army.

NOTHING I planned for occurred.

No regrets, though. I've had a lot of fun.

4th grade. Had a mom who was struggling to cope with a bad marriage. A step dad who didn't seem like a bad guy, just a complete fricking idiot.

Puberty started young and I thought something was wrong because I started growing hair. I shaved everything off until finding an old biology book and reading it.

And I accidentally got drunk for the first time by confusing virgin daquiris with frozen grapefruit juice and vodka. Had maybe 3 and puked everywhere on the ride home from my cousin's graduation. Amos Moses was playing. Parents chalked it up to food poisoning.

Wish I could go back and not be a dick to my mom for 20 years.

On New Year’s Day my wife & I moved into the same house in P’cola that I’m posting from now. We had gotten riproaring drunk the night before and were miserable for a week.

I was 35 at the time, working for the local cable co. doing IT work for the advertising dept. Wife was in her third year of being a veterinarian, having graduated from MSU in ‘93.

We got pregnant with our first daughter that summer. She was born the following February. So I was on my way to fatherhood, which I have to admit has turned out far better than I could have imagined back then.

Unfortunately I also have to admit that I’ve completely lost the youthful optimism I possessed in ‘96. Either that or I’ve become more aware of reasons not to be optimistic that have always existed.

But I still wouldn’t change a thing, even if I could. Bittersweet is always the best flavor.

In 1996 I was a couple years removed from college, actively involved in running the family business, smoking a lot of weed, and screwing everything from high school seniors to lonely housewives in their early 40's. Life was good.

In 1996 I jerked off 2-3 times a day.
Now I’m down to once a day.

That was a year after I graduated from LSU.

I was living in Atlanta and working at the Olympics.

I had no idea what I would do after the Olympics, but I was having a lot of irresponsible fun.

Lived on Burgundy, worked at a few bars in the quarter slinging drinks I was too young to buy, finished an apprenticeship at a local tattoo studio, trajectory changed a lot since then but I am happy where I landed.

It was great. The first few years of internet were awesome until it evolved into this.

where were you living?
Minnesota

what were you doing?
Realizing I should have went to State rather than freezing my arse off in Minneapolis. (Though I did love living on Greek row enjoying a ton of booze and poontang on the weekends.) Not at all exaggerating here... we went a whole week where the wind chill ever got below 0. Bought Chinese from a block away and by the time I got back I had to microwave that shite.

what was your life trajectory?
About to smarten up and move to Starkville. I count the days until our kids graduate high school and we return to the south...there is no place in the Midwest that is worse than the central part. Ice storms and minimal snow to enjoy. It was 81 freaking degrees here last Wednesday yet half the leaves were down already because it was below freezing for 2 hours Sunday night.

First half of the year inside my dad. Second half of the year inside my mom. ‘97 baby. Life trajectory was nowhere to go but up.

Deployed for the first time. Went to Kuwait for some Intrinsic action bullshite. I was a brand new M1A1 tanker.

Bill Clinton had us sit on the Iraq border for 4 months waiting to invade. Obviously didn't happen at that time.
