I’ve gotta say it’s 1984. Stellar movies and music being released, patriotism soaring under Reagan, and Hulkamania running buck wild. It’s 1984
Transformers and GI Joe toys also came out

I don't see "peak" and "the 80est" as the same thing.
82 to 84 were the 80est to me. Things got weird for a while.

1984 for all the reasons listed.
But also because it was the year that (for the first time in my life) a girl on the high school dance team took off her clothes for me and revealed something I had only seen briefly in distorted lines the blocked Cinemax channel.
I will never forget that moment.
(That is ironically about how long it lasted - a moment).

Why did people cheer for a man trampling on our rights? Because he was better than the last guy? That is a low bar.

84-86. Right in the middle.
The 80s were so awesome in many ways.

1984 - kicked the door down for the 80’s
1985 - was when it all felt 80’s
1986 - merely an extension on 1985
Then around 1987 - things started to shift a little differently to it’s own subculture 80’s (which were even better but not nearly as depicted in movies and tv). That subculture continued to about 1991.
Pre-1984 it was a weird time. Not 70’s yet not found it’s true identity.
But I would live every day of the 80’s again compared to what we have now. They were glorious.

There was this weird consensus among my friends and siblings that 1987 was sort of a boundary between old and new. I remember floating the idea around 1999, and it was interesting how everyone else said they felt the same way.

Two watershed years were 1991 when grunge hit and 2001 with 9-11.

It was a great time to be a teenager. You could drive at 15 and no cell phone so your parents couldn't keep constant tabs on you. Drinking age was 18. No cell phones really yet so you still had to meet up with people in person. It really is a wonder we are still alive. So many great movies and videos. Our entire neighborhood and most of our high school still keeps in touch. We had so much fun being teenagers that it bonded us.

I've considered 1987 to be the end of the greatest twenty year period in the history of music. It started with Are You Experienced and The Doors and ended with Appetite for Destruction and The Joshua Tree. To me it was the last great year for music period, not good year--great year.

1984-1987 was peak 80s. Hard to specify a year within that.
But yeah 80-83 was transitioning from 70s and 88-89 was transitioning to 90s.

1987 introduced us to Al Bundy so I will go with that.
I was born in '79 so too young to remember too much about the first half of the '80s but for me the late '80s into the early '90s was great.
It was a bubble in time like no other. Technology was still around the corner but household PCs were becoming more common as was the internet and AOL chat rooms. Good times goofing off on those with my friends. No social media, no way for parents to reach you 24/7, and we weren't 100% consumed by video games and screens like today's kids. Things were still cheap enough and the economy was better than it was in the early '80s.
Overall I feel for kids today. They will never be able to just go goof off without parents tracking them down through a cell phone and they will never do things without boasting about it on social media which takes some of the genuine joy out of just doing things for fun instead of likes.
