craigslist and save tons of money
I prefer the old school washer and dryer over the new digital ones.

Buy old school shite, the new era machines are shite and break down too much. Had the old style that lasted for 15 yrs. Wife wanted a new set and nothing but problems the last 5 yrs

The most used extra feature on my set is the speed cycle. It does a very small load in fifteen minutes each wash and dry. Even my washer and dryer go fast.

Get the most basic one available.
My suggestion to a brand would be a set of Speed Queens. No bells and whisltes all stainless welded tub with metal gears.

And get the fastest RPM's available in the spin cycle. Your dryer will hardly run as most of the water was spun out.

Honestly we bought a GE set that had not so great reviews but it was what I wanted feature wise -- full agitator, could select my own water level.
Set was like $800 ... Have had them since August and haven't had an issue. I'd recommend them.

This right here. Bought a samsung front load washer & dryer set a few years back. Saved $600 by getting the floor models

Top top top!
frick front loaders. Biggest mistake of my life was getting rid of my 1990 $200 sears to loader. That thing was a beast and even though I picked this super high end Samsung up from a neighbor for next to nothing.. Just swapped the circuit board to fix it. I hate it. Clothes are forever stinky. You keep the front cracked fur months..then forget to for just a day and you ruin a load of clothes.
I knew I made a mistake when I had about 20 calls on the old washer 10 minutes after putting it on craigslist.

First thing I look for is drum size. Once you get a large drum size, the standard size and horrible.

What's wrong with bottom load?
I used my GFs for 2 years. It didn't clean clothes worth a shite. They hardly use any water which I think is the problem. The lack of an agitator might also be problem. Get a top loader with basic options. I bought an Amana washer & dryer with no bells or whistles. It has a pretty descent capacity. It cleans good & the dryer works fine.

I look for the ones with the least amount of fancy computer stuff.
The more bells and whistles, the more that can break.
My current washing machine was found on the side of the road and is ab 15 to 20 years old we think. It works fine.

I usually try to get the Spanish text on my washer and dryer. It makes it easier on the help.

Rule# 1- Look for the hole at the top and not on the side.

If you get front load, go with LG due to the direct drive motor. I believe LG is ranked #1 by consumer reports
