In that case I’d bring something. If you know anything specific that he (or his wife?) like, that’s a great start. Otherwise, champagne, port, bourbon, scotch, etc should work well. Also, you avoid your date thinking you’re cheap or uncouth by not bringing anything.

If the guy actually said don’t bring anything, then don’t bring anything.

I wouldn’t bring food but get him something. Could be something simple like cigars or liquor if he enjoys them. Just say “I appreciate our friendship and brought you this, merry Christmas ” when showing up.

Exactly. A gift is a way of thanking him for all of the trouble and expense he went through and for including you.

A really unique and appropriate gift would be a gift box of ultra-fine chocolates from renowned chef, Alain Ducasse. Le Chocolat is his brand. The stores are only in Europe (first ones were in Paris), UK, and Japan (I think). I got hooked on these in 2017 during a Paris trip. He only started shipping to the US two years ago. The pralines (not like New Orleans pralines), truffles, and plain squares are unparalleled. I can only eat one, maybe two, a day. Definitely worth a look since he sounds like a person who enjoys the finer things and has refined taste.

The gift idea for his wife, if he has one, is great as well. One of my friends is promoter for sports who also owns his own venue and for big events he always has gifts for the wives.

All jokes aside, you don’t bring anything except a small gift for the host to enjoy later.

When greeted, just say Merry Christmas, and that you brought him something that he can enjoy on his own time.

Cigars, dessert wines, whiskey, or a box of chocolates if you’re thinking of his wife in mind.

The unspoken rule is that this means don’t bring anything for the party itself (potato salad), and don’t feel obligated to bring a gift. But also if you do, it’s very appreciated. Don’t bring wine because most people have favorites, dessert wines are acceptable

10 years ago for Christmas dinner, I had someone bring a set of really nice kitchen towels. The invite was don’t bring anything, we had everything covered.

Always appreciated that.

I would suggest something historically relevant to him politically. An old speech framed, a copy of the cover of a bill he sponsored (maybe his penultimate work), something like that.

Otherwise your just trying to hard not to show empty handed.

Make some herb infused olive oil (very easy - literally stick sprigs of an herb in a clear bottle, fill it with EVOO and cork it). Then attach a hand-written note card to the gentelman thanking him for his generosity, influence on your life, etc...

This is a great idea.
