Re: Amazon Addiction

I tried several sets of soft rules before fully bending a knee to drink at Amazon.

First was to always buy from local small business if possible, unless the price is greater than 3x that of Amazon. Problem with that was for phone accessories and electronics it was often 5x more expensive locally.

Then it was inventory. It took 30 minutes to get to some store and they no longer carried it or did not have it in stock when they said they did. The pandemic made that 3x worse.

Even the BigBox stores started to stock less of the "lesser needed" items.

On two occasions, I got items from a local small business that had obviously been a return. They were OK, but certainly not factory new - one of those I paid a premium for.

Then it was how I was treated. Had both a big ticket and a small ticket item with different problems at two different local small business. Neither could/would help, even when I offered to pay for service after the very recent sale, which should have been a warranty or an exchange. I realize its not 1980 any more, but wow.

We have a few fancy Amazon warehouses now. I need stuff. I click, and it's at my door later in the day, or the next day. Too easy.

It's 2025 not 1960, adapt to the delivery model and physically avoid the store altogether.

How tired people seem to be.

Maybe it’s this state getting worse and people being exhausted, but I remember growing up we would be out and about at 7 AM on Saturday for breakfast, grocery shopping, or just to beat the heat in the summer and I’d see a good deal of other people. Not crazy packed, but people were out and about.

The other day I went for a long run at 6 AM, finished up close to 730 and there were so few cars it was crazy. I did see one guy passed out in front of a store, but it feels like people have lost their energy or something. It makes me sad.

People are eating trash, in general and not really exercising

Many stay on their phone to all hours of the night, so not only are they not physically getting sleep, but their brains are constantly working while absorbing new "content"

People are busy all the time now. I know people that have every weekend from here until October "booked" doing something. It's nuts.

Seems like half the population just sits at home all the time and the other half does enough activities for both groups.

Every talks about how much wealth boomers have, but people rarely talk about how poor off the youngest boomers are.

Those born between 1959 and 1965, over the next 5 years will turn 65. Of that segment of boomers, 2/3s have inadequate retirement savings, and 27% have no retirement savings. To put that in perspective over a quarter of those boomer have less money then Gen Z in retirement.

Fat too many people, both men and women, are getting colon cancer in the late 30s and early 40s.

How nobody can fix or install anything anymore.

I have actually seen quotes to people from 75 to 200 bucks to come out and change their home AC filters. That’s asinine. I have thought about advertising my services for it for 50 bucks plus cost of filters locally and making evening appointments.

Restaurants don't even try with salads anymore.

Instead of a nice salad tossed with an appropriate amount of dressing where each component is coated, you get a bowl that is overstuffed with ingredients and either the dressing is plopped on top or on the side. There is no way to properly toss the salad at the table unless you ask for a second bowl.
