Lego is the number 1 toy brand in the WORLD now and priced as such. As others might have mentioned, the bigger sets are aimed towards teenagers and adults because most kids couldn't build that death star or the colossus builds of some of the expensive sets. They have smaller packs for kids that aren't as expensive that kids can build. Sizes from very little amount for younger kids and gradually get bigger packs you can get as kids grow. I also think you can still order just Brick sets that have no manual for free builders.
Another side note, apple has an app called BuildIt (I think) that can scan a bunch of Legos at once and give you diagrams of things you can building using what it sees in the picture. Not sure the price, but that seems cool. Should be on Android this year sometime

My wife (no pics) really wants a massive Hogwarts set that's pretty damn expensive. I really don't want to buy it, but really want to help put it together.
Also... Make sure the kids pick up every piece. Stepping on those bad boys are painful.

Well, that's not true. As others have said, they make specialty pieces only for certain sets.
those specialty pieces can fit with pieces from other sets. it's gonna be expensive to set up a mold just for the wings of a star wars droid fighter.

Wonder how much the Lego replica of the US capitol building runs?
Probably 3 to 5 years

I think Lego building is a fun thing to do with my kids, but I'll be damned if I'm dropping the kind of money they ask for some of that shite.
I kind of disagree with that first statement.
I don't collect anything but I understand the impulse to want to collect things - especially from a nostalgic childhood. Buying and building Legos as a collector is far different than buying them to play with them like some adult child.

I said every lego brick can fit every other lego brick ever made, that is true. Put it to the test if you disagree.

In the extremely rare event that a specialty piece is designed for only one set, it will still interlock with any brick from any set ever made, even the original wooden ones.

My son loved Legos and we bought him all sorts of stuff. He had huge pirate ship, a ghost castle, and I don’t even know how many Star Wars ships. And while these were all great and fun for him, one thing that always sorta bothered me is each kit was designed to only build that one thing. It was great for teaching him to read and follow instructions, but not use his imagination. When I was a kid most legos came just in a box of various pieces and you used your imagination to build whatever you could envision. It taught creativity and how to think. Now they just teach kids how to follow instructions. I believe Legos needs to put their focus back on selling boxes of just pieces a kid can use to build whatever instead of these specialized kits they build only one thing.

This X 1000. The best toys for children under the age of 10 or 12, are simple toys. Things they have to develop with. When I was a kid there was nothing more awesome than a neighbor getting a new appliance and we got to use the box...
It was a boat, plane, whatever. The more complex and detailed a toy is coming out of the box, the more difficult it is to make it anything but what it's supposed to be. You can't exactly make a big Star wars ship become something that is not...

We have plenty of Legos.
None of them that fancy.
You can still buy the basic sets for pretty cheap. The lego city collection is fantastic.

The Block 19 kit was only like $700 until Lego sued this company

It's BrickIt. High ceiling for that app which would only be purchased by LEGO to restrict and kill it. The app promotes creativity with LEGOs you have, not having to buy more.
Let's also not forget about LEGO Design byME and LEGO Digital Designer. It is/was a CAD program for LEGOs and similar to (if not exactly) what is used on LEGO Masters. You could design your own LEGO build, print instructions and order the exact bricks you needed for your custom set. From what I understand, there is a huge opening in the market for this return, but you have to go through LEGO licensing to get your foot in the door.
Someone could/should make updated TS, AB, or etc in LDD

I have at least $700 worth of built Lego Star Wars sets in my office at work. Same for a lot of my coworkers (Marvel is the other big one).

Lego has essentially replaced building model cars and things like that.

I've been getting into the Mega Construx Masters of the Universe sets. I like these better than Legos cause the mini figs have better articulation. I think they're generally a little cheaper than Legos.
This thing was really fun to build. It retailed for $250, but it's getting hard to find now and the price is going up.

I have this BAMF in my office. Full articulation, winch, and the steering works. It was $40.

Also, when I was growing up all I had was 3 different sizes of Legos. I had to use my imagination to build shite.
Same here. They were square or rectangle and came in 4 colors. Some were flat.
