I'll admit that I forked out $100 for the Saturn V....but it is pretty damn cool.

Just popping in here to say that if anybody isn't watching LEGO Masters on Fox, they are missing out. Great show.

Yes. I remember distinctly as a kid looking at the Lego isle and seeing the prices of all these sets and not even asking my parents because they were so expensive.

Add in that now all the sets have official licensing and the prices are unreal.

I’ll say this though, they have some cool stuff these days. The super Mario series is really neat and interactive.

I will also say that all of these sets have more tiny specialty pieces so the days of building and breaking down are just like throwing money down the drain because you will never get them back together.

Lastly my 4 year old stepped on a lego he left on the floor and that gave me a bit of satisfaction that he was also the victim of this at a young age

I have at least $700 worth of built Lego Star Wars sets in my office at work. Same for a lot of my coworkers (Marvel is the other big one).

You can still do that.

Go to the LEGO store and buy boxes of mixed/random blocks and build whatever you want.

I think I've seen them on local BST sites for like $2/lb.

I may have to just hit that up.

The price tag for this bad boy is $90. Were Lego sets always this expensive?

Adjusted for inflation that set would have been $35 in 1985. A set that big in 1985, if they existed, probably would have been $35.

Nostalgia is a big part of it - and the target market for that is people like you (or atleast your age) that grew up playing with Legos.

The people your age who never grew mentally past ten years old.

I think Lego building is a fun thing to do with my kids, but I'll be damned if I'm dropping the kind of money they ask for some of that shite.

How many adults were building lego sets in the 80s and 90s?

Lots of people with full time jobs are still into them. Easier to sell a $500 set to someone making $80k/year.

It’s not like all Lego sets are expensive. My son has around 30 sets now, and I’d say most of them were in the $10-$40 range. BB8 was his most expensive one at $90.

That worm turned long ago and like you mentioned just from browsing the sets it’s obvious these sets were never marketed to kids but their parents. LEGOs are great for kids, especially their brain development but they all, boys & girls, seem to go through that phase from 6-10 and just naturally progress to other interests. They’re a better gauge of the parents than the kid. Cannot tell you how many psychos we ran across that were OCD about their kids never losing a piece to a 1000 piece set that cost an X-amount of dollars, as opposed to you know letting kids be kids and enjoy themselves while learning something as well.

Lego price hasn’t changed in relative terms in years. There’s numerous sites that track price per brick. Licensed sets are generally $.10/brick. For some reason people always compare a 200 piece generic castle or space shuttle from childhood to a discontinued 4,000 piece Death Star.
