I’m 57 years old and I never imagined the great country that I grew up in spiraling into the shithole that it has become. The America that used to exist is dead and buried.

Omar Fateh, who wants to be the next mayor of Minneapolis, says immigrants are not a domestic threat but white people are.
He should try that in a Somali town...

It's always been very bleeding heart. It was home to the Hmong and Somali as well as other groups of refugees due to its dense network of social support orgs. However it use to be home to Billy Grahm's ministry was headquartered there in 1950s. And Lutherans use to be way more conservative. Things changed in the 1960s.
I think over time the town became way over educated instead of being mainly blue collar working class town. Post 1960s this meant leftwing and artsy. As people moved out of being Christians in their culture they replaced it with secular social justice. They cultivated radicalism and it has paid off for their home party, the DFL. Modern MSP is basically Brooklyn of the Midwest, Portland of the prairie. It became that way the same way those other cities did.

If you think Minneapolis is a “Somali City” then you’ve never been to Minneapolis

Just one more example of many of how flawed the primary system is here in the US. Primary voters are the partisans, grassroots, and extremes of a party. Whether it's the dems choosing this idiot or the NYC idiot or the GOP choosing Herschel Walker or Roy Moore, our primary system consistently pisses out poor candidates far more often that not. Good, level-headed, pragmatic candidates don't pass the purity tests both parties subscribe to these days.
I'm a yuge fan of ranked choice voting, which gives power to compromise.

I've gone a couple times in the last couple years and it's really kind of a shithole.....I was expecting a much nicer city. That said, the Surly brewery adds at least a point onto the city score.

This information is from 2010 - 2022. You will see many counties lost population then there is an area in the south east part of the state where the population exploded. I assume many of those people are Somalians?
USAfacts.com
Did Minnesota appeal to these people because it was losing its population?

The Clinton administration relocated most of the Somali refugees in the mid 1990’s. I assume some Minnesotan politician got a pretty nice kickback for be willing to accept the refugees.
