Never understood why the top boards aren't angled to block the sun, but for some reason everyone puts them straight up and down for some reason.

I don't really get pergolas. Lot of money for some wood structure that neither keeps out sun or rain.
Either you want a roof or you don't. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate the beauty of paying for and maintaining a structure that serves little or no functional purpose.

$13K Labor for 4-6 man-wk of work.
~ $3,000 - $1,200 per person, per week.
sounds a little high but acceptable. You can always ride down to the Home Depot and employ some of the guys hanging around out front.
Are there any other costs coming out of their end? Permit fees? Dump costs? fasteners? coating/sealers? depreciation on tools? Insurance? Licensing?...........

While they do not eliminate sun, they do provide shade...........

Always get at least 3 quotes. You never know how busy a guy is, he could be quoting you sky high because he has to work OT to get it done or has better jobs he's passing up.
Without seeing your roof work that needs done, I'd say it's impossible really to judge the quote. Also, how much is repurposing the wood saving you? Would it not be cheaper to have a quick cheap demo and use new boards to do whatever they were going to reuse the old ones for?

No clue. I prob wouldn't do it, but I don't think my parents care very much. They just want to cut a check and be done with it

That is way too much to read.

I have a brick patio that I'm thinking of installing a pergola cover on.
My house forms a "U" around it (three sides). I recently replaced my gutters and had to install a downspout that exhausted onto the patio as the run was too long to avoid all downspouts on the patio. A feel a pergola is my best option considering downspout location, brick patio, evaporation, green slime buildup, etc.........
I need sun on the patio to evaporate the rainwater....
The Pergola would provide shade on my kitchen and den windows from the evening sun.

So you can brag you spent 20k on something that looks good but is completely useless

Supplies from Sequoia on Airline Hwy in Metairie
Installed by French Quarter Fencing.
Came out great. During the install, had electrician come out and run wires for ceiling fans and TV. That cost extra, but was reasonable.
Top to bottom, from removal of pavers, to hanging the TV plus patio furniture from Sam's was $14,300

I think 8 grand for demo is crazy. I suspect the whole project maybe 10k-12k maybe but it's a stretch 15k.

labor cost is kinda high for a job that should take 4-5 days for 2 people.

my uncles and I built the first one in 5 days,
It took you and a few other men 5 days to build 1 without a roof, but you estimate this guy and his wife should be able to demo, rebuild, and add a roof in less time?
Are you retarded?

3 Joe Schmoes <<< 1 master carpenter and his wife helper
Demoing should take like 4-5 hours lmao, that's not crazy at all. The roof is gonna be the longest part

the guy sounds like a finish carpenter. i mean, if it's fancy, i'm not surprised it will cost that much. Does he have some pergola references you could look at? what if his work is amazing?
also, i agree that pergolas are dumb. they look cool but don't serve a purpose. Built one for my in-laws last year similar to the old one in the OP but also topped it with tinted corrugated plastic. The low pitch of the pergola and the thinness of the corrugated plastic makes it almost impossible to see (the plastic) but it blocks the sun and rain. Kind of the best of both worlds.
