Pergolas are very impractical.

Let's build a "roof" that still rains through it.

Probably is a little high but you said he's good and respected which given the contractor world means he's in demand and can bid work so if he gets it he gets it and if he doesn't he goes to the next one. Get other bids to check his numbers, you'll then have the info needed to make a informed choice.

I never understood what a pergola is supposed to do exactly?

Also the demo here is extremely DIY. It's wood.

I am not a fan of Pergola in this heavy heat / sun / rain environment.

Solid patio roof with some fans or nothing

keeps sun off the patio so you can sit outside and drink a beer without getting roasted.

Explain why you need a master carpenter to put up a pergola? Many lumber yards have everything pre-cut. It's like putting together a puzzle for retarded kids.

Also, I would use a master carpenter for trim work inside a house.... window casing, transoms, baseboards, crown mouldings, cabinets, etc. Pretty much any Joe Schmoe can put up a Pergola, you and couple buddies did the first. I'd get more bids.

Is he compensating you for the materials you're giving him? If not you're getting double fricked by giving him free materials and paying him for labor.

well, they dont. they could hire some mexicans to do it, but they prefer the peace of mind knowing that the work is quality.

he's done some interior work for them before, which is why they went to him first.

keep in mind that im the only one that took issue with the bid, my parents dont really know any better and were prepared to commit.

I do t understand pergolas. I almost never see plants on them. They seem like they serve no purpose
