I passed about a mile of traffic stopped on the side of the road today waiting in line for free turkeys that a church was giving away. There were a lot of fairly new cars in the line. It was quite a long wait for just a turkey. I began wondering what the chances are that those fairly new cars will ever have an oil change before they end up for sale. If you have to give up two hours of your day to wait for a free turkey, what are the chances you can afford an oil change? In fact, I wonder about that for even the non free turkey recipient people. I worked with a young girl, an engineer at that, who embarrassingly admitted she had never had her oil changed in the three years she had owned her car when I asked.

Define “routinely.”

If you mean changing it every 6 months or 3,000 miles like the stickers they put on your windshield say then you’re a complete idiot.

Newer vehicles can easily go 7,500 miles between oil changes.

White dude. I’m pretty sure the turkeys were also white before decapitated, plucked, and frozen.

At a reasonable frequency.

I just trade in my car and buy a new one every 5,000 miles. Cuts down on maintenance.

The guy at the place I have my oil changed at more or less said this. Said they have to put a 3k mile sticker, but you can typically go at least 5k.

I rarely push beyond 5-6k just because my truck has a lot of miles on it and I drive it pretty hard. I've put 2k on it in about a month and a half...lol!

Ok, I knew a guy that believed an article he read and never changed oil, only added when necessary. He called me one Sunday and said his car sounded funny and his oil looked real dark. It was back in the early 90s. I heard a squealing under the valve cover. It was an in line 6 Nissan. It was packed with crud under there. We cleaned it out and changed oil and filter and he became a believer in oil changes afterwards.

I do mine every 5k. The even intervals are easy to remember. I don’t know too many people who do their own oil changes. Mostly older guys and a few gear heads. Everyone my age brings it in or doesn’t do it like an idiot

One of the benefits of having a company truck is every 5,000 miles I get my oil changed and at 10,000 miles tires rotated. And have to do no more than sign the ticket for them to get a PO. Same when it’s time for tires or if were to break down. And thanks to the Wright Express Card I don’t even pay for gas. All I have to do is turn in my mileage monthly and pay tax on whatever personal mileage I have.

Whenever I have to bring it in for something else, like brakes or check engine light (for emissions inspection) I have them change the oil. So anywhere between 3000 or 20,000 miles, depending on how things time up. If it's been a while, I'll check it, and top-off if need be.

Change my wife’s every 10k miles, change mine every 3k, but only because it takes me about a year to drive 3k miles.

You are getting downvoted but with moderate quality synthetic oil (ie Mobil 1) most cars are fine with a 10K drain. My travel car usually goes 12-14k before a drain. About once a year, every 3rd or 4th change, I send Blackstone a sample and get a UOA and the results are still good after over 400k miles. It just needs about 1/2 quart top off at about the midway point.

All our other vehicles I change at the 1-year mark regardless of miles unless they go to the track then I change it after the track day or if I do much towing with the SUV then I change at about 5k.

My HOA requires synthetic oil no more than 5 months old in all vehicles.

Oil changes are cheap. Got one at the dealership yesterday for $19.99. Can't buy the stuff to do it myself for that.

Change my wife’s every 5K, “check” her oil when ever she lets.
