Same, the 3k/3 month deal has been going for as long as I can remember, I know newer engines are better than old ones, could legit probably go 7-8k without an issue

For 100k plus miles, I usually go over 3k miles before I do.

Eta: also I'm just a piece of shite.

Probably only 50%. I'm in that 50%, though.

It is less about the quality of modern engines (though it is part of it) and more about the quality of lubricants. Modern oils simply do their job better for longer. While the oil might look generally the same that old can of Quaker State 30w with a spout stuck in it has about as much in common with a modern synthetic as a TRS-80 has with an Ipad.

Okay so my car, a 2018 GMC Terrain, takes full synthetic oil. 90% of my mileage is interstate mileage.

How frequently should I get my oil changed

I do mine every 5k miles and do it myself. I don’t trust those Jiffy Lube type places.

Plus, it’s faster.

IMO assuming no towing and your are past the first oil drain I would go 10k then have an UOA done, a standard analysis from Blackstone is $28. Get the fine folks on the Bobistheoilguy forum to help interpret the results and go from there. My guess is 12.5k-15k would end up being fine.

UOA (used oil analysis) can also occasionally be useful because it can help predict when it is time to trade a vehicle in when the engine is becoming a ticking bomb.

My point is to use objective numbers and science to help make a determination versus a seat of the pants number.

Routinely, absolutely. And, my daughter know to do this, as well. I personally change the oil on my jeep, because it's easy and I like to do it (takes literally 5 minutes). On my wife's sedan, not so much. Too many components to remove to get to the pan and filter.

I worked with a young girl, an engineer at that, who embarrassingly admitted she had never had her oil changed in the three years she had owned her car when I asked.

Did you offer to check her oil for her?

I love the down votes. A lot of newer vehicles recommend 10K miles.

Not only do I change my oil but I also knit my own sweaters made out of the wool from my herd of sheep.
