Saint Martinville

A mill that provided nearly a 1000 jobs and produced for Fruit of the Loom was closed years ago. Following that, Walmart packed up and left. These places were replaced by a Dollar General and a dusty casino.

I live in Monroe now and pretty much hate it. I don’t have a single thing about it that stands out. A few good restaurants, but no women worth taking there. I’m looking for an escape route.

I grew up in Monroe ... left after high school (00)for the Army... been in Baton Rouge since I got out(03)...

My plan is to make it back to Monroe by 2025... I’ve been a lot of places ... Monroe better than everywhere else ...

Baton Rouge. Sad to see once nice parts of town now look abandoned and unkempt.

Baton Rouge, and this comes from a life-long Baton Rougean. I'll also add Alexandria.

Moorgan city had almost 20,000 people in the late 80's. By 2000 they had fallen to near 10,000. That is a drastic drop for a smaller city.

Any of you baws ever Bogalusa?

Its true. Bogalusa used to be the economic hub of the Northshore. STP had only a fraction of the population of Washington Parish 50 years ago. The downturn of the paper mill, who I believe only has about 1200 employees total now, plus culture, sealed its fate. Now the remaining tax base cannot support its legacy costs and it has been taken over by the state. When you drive though downtown, you can tell it really it used to be something. Check out this listing in Bogalusa Country Club lol.

Holy crap!

In the late 80's I went to a fun Jr. golf tournament there during the summers. You could tell even back then that the town was struggling, but the community did a very good job of supporting the golf events and trying to make a good showing for everyone.

Ville Platte is an ABSOLUTE DISASTER. Abandoned homes throughout the town, crime everywhere and the boudin has leveled off.

When I was growing up there in the 40s and 50s, it was a growing city - the population was more than twice what it is today. Decent schools, low unemployment, good infastructure, cheap public transportation (ride from one end of town to the other on the bus for a nickle).

If you are of a mind to, you can purchase homes for unbelievable prices. The house I grew up in was on the market recently for an asking price of not even half what a comparable house would sell in most other markets in Louisiana.

You're aiming really high. It's best to temper your expectations.
