My first bit of advice, is don't buy a shotgun for home defense, you will be much better off with a semi-auto rifle or a semi auto pistol. I'd recommend a quality AR-15, quality AK-47 or Quality full size pistol in 9mm.
My second bit of advice if you ignore my first bit of advice, buy a Benelli M4. They are the best shotgun for defense in the world. They are so good you might as well concede that other shotguns do not exist.

Name checks out.
OP, if you're dead set on a shotgun, a Mossberg or Benelli tactical shotgun is what you're looking for. I prefer rifles and pistols, though.
Regardless of what you get, get some training and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE with it. If all you do is put a box of ammo through it the week after you buy it then put it in the closet, you might as well not have it. When you are waken up from a dead sleep at 3 am and need it to save your life, you're going to die fumbling with your weapon if you haven't trained with it and know how to use. Half asleep and jacked up on adrenaline is no time to figure out how to use your weapon.

Remington 870. 21” barrel. Take the plug out. Purchase a screw in choke that will throw a wide pattern at closer ranges. Load it with some 3” home protection loads.
Take a few trips to the range to become familiar with the weapon. If you have children, take them with you to the range so they get a firsthand look at how dangerous the gun can be. Teach them to respect it and never touch it without you being present. Otherwise, lock it up so they can’t get to it.

Remington 870
The Outdoor board will tell you the same thing.

Benelli’s are awesome, but quite expensive. I couldn’t afford one.

Do you really want to start with a shotgun if you don't even have a weapon in your house? That seems like a lot of gun for a novice
Huh?

What terrible advice for home defense, especially for someone that doesn’t have any experience. A long gun is definitely NOT what you want in close quarters situations, and a 9mm doesn’t have enough stopping power.

If I were going to go that way, I’d get an M27.

I tend to think shotguns are a bad choice for home defense. Very messy.
Go with a pistol or smallish rifle but be careful on the rifle since the Bullet velocity can penetrate a body and enter a wall which could injure another person.

For home defense a pump with a pistol grip and a shorter barrel. Also, don’t get buck shite or slugs but rather get something more like #8 or #6 shot as the bigger shot will go through Sheetrock like there is. I thing there.

First off, the odds of home invasion are remarkably small. You are twice as likely to get struck by lightning as you are to experience a home invasion robbery. That being said, about 200 happen in this country every day.
Secondly, to do this properly, you really need two weapons. A defensive shotgun and a handgun. Like it or not, your wife should know how to operate everything and be comfortable with both. You will need to get her on board with any thing you decide to do.
Before you make any decisions, you need to look into over penetration of different rounds in a household environment. The most common defensive rounds From 9mm - 12 gauge) will penetrate multiple layers of sheet rock and other common house hold building materials. You need to think about the most likely shooting lanes in your home in advance and where your loved ones sleep, live and play in relation to those. For example, in our house the bedrooms are separated by the kitchen/family room/great room where most of the entrances are located. If the worst case ever happened, I would have to think very carefully about my back stop before I pulled the trigger or I could risk hitting "sleeping" family members.
In the mean time, armor your front door by putting 3" or 3.5" case hardened screws in the door frame and get a dog (if you don't already have one). They are the best first line of defense in such situations.
Edited to add: It should be obvious by my post that I've very pro-2A, but there are other less than lethal options out there. For example, Bear spray/pepper spray/gels has a rage of 15-20' and has the ability to (temporally) incapacitate an intruder. However, be very careful about discharging it indoors. It could effect everyone in the space. It also may not be legal to use in that capacity in some jurisdictions. When in doubt call your local authorities.

This is the most solid advice in this thread so far.

Mossberg makes a 12 gauge pump action shotgun with a short barrel specifically for home defense.
