Honest answer - have the kid think about power engineering.
It's going to determine what everything else does. It's a huge growth sector.

Get into safety automation. Built in redundancy and obsoletion and is only going to get more intense as we move into more machine driven tasks.

I got an EE degree with digital emphasis from LSU and was in an IT career 6 years after graduating.
I’ll retire at 57 if the economy doesn’t crap the bed, and I threw away money in bars throughout my 20s.

Tell him to go into technical sales. More upside for pay unless he starts his own thing or hits the executive fast track.

Software, 15 years, 260k base. One of the best decisions I’ve made in my life was dropping out of Mechanical Engineering in favor of Computer Science. I really only did it because I didn’t think I could handle more calculus classes

Don't worry about the money. Engineers who aren't top of the class almost to a man start out with serviceable salaries and within 10-15 years are making very good money if they have any drive at all.

I’ve done sales for 12 years now
With retirement and all I’m supposedly set but who knows. I enjoy what I do. I’m 35 now so I’ve got a ways to go but we’re ESOP.

quote:One of my kids has a BS and an MS in Mechanical Engineering but was focused on a specific cutting-edge material. Ended up doing an aerospace role out of school and then went to a support supplier from there.
Tell him to study Materials. Whether it’s mechanical, physics, Pchem…materials always get better and are the cutting edge in everything.
Does well.
