Fat people are buoyant.

Dollar menu items are cheap and cheap to make.
Tight control on labor and product costs
But mainly, volume. Both in-store volume and the sheer number of locations.

Like I said, the brand. Stick a McDonalds anywhere and it will generate money.
Same could be said for Sears...see what happened to them?

I think the regular burger, like the ones in the kids meals, is one of my favorite foods of all time
If I ever eat at McDonalds...I just get one of the small plain cheeseburgers.

For whatever reason, I don't get the cheese on it. But yep.. the small regular burgers are my favorite.
Contrary to all of the "fat" comments in this thread, McDonalds is relatively okay on calorie content if you avoid the fries.
Even a Big Mac is only like 550. That's not horrible.

I got a craving for cookies n cream a week ago, so I snagged an Oreo mcflurry. While there I saw their new "never frozen" Angus smokehouse burger with onion jam on it. It was actually quite tasty. I'm sure it was loaded with sugar.

Ya know, I like their fries as much as anybody but they are overrated, unless fresh out of the fryer.

I'm the only weird who doesn't care at all about their fries. I love ketchup, so I like fries with the ability to grab a healthy dip. You need like 5 of their fries in your scoop to make it worth it.

You know damn well the vast majority of people there aren’t just getting a burger and water.

Well whatever they get of course their drinks is diet coke. Cuz you know that makes the meal healthier.

The live and die by there name and the quality associated with it. They actually have copyright to the prefix Mc not just McDonald’s.
If you try and start a business with mc in front of your name and they decide your Profiting off their image of quality. They can sue you.

I can get a kids burger happy meal with water or diet soda and be less than 400 calories.

Hard to beat a quarter pounder for a buck

quote:I don't know. They have switched most restaurants to fresh beef and will do it for all of them at some point. Their coffee has beaten Starbucks in blind taste tests. And they have those sweet ordering kiosks that really let you customize your order. I judge them to be on the upswing from where they were.
Inferior product quality

Are their fries the only thing keeping them at the top of the food chain (pun intended)?

Sears has or had a very diverse inventory, most of which you could get somewhere else for cheaper. McDonalds is only available at McDonalds. It’s much easier to stay afloat when you only have to be good at doing one thing.

I don't know, but on a Saturday morning at 9AM the McDonald's drive thru has both lanes of the main drag at a dead stop. I hate that place.

Haven’t eaten McDonalds in about 10 years

By 2018 fast food restaurant standards, they are:
Not as clean as some
I'll give you that and not as clean as the once were waaay back.
quote:
Not as cheap as they used to be
But still cheaper than most.
quote:
Inferior product quality
About the same as always, sometimes better than they used to be.
quote:
Inferior employees compared to some other chains
That is not new and still better than many others.
quote:
Slower than they used to be
Still faster than most places

I think it goes a long way plus the fact that they have so many locations in the US. In terms of burger places, more than BK and Wendy's combined. Lots of smaller towns have a McD but no other chain burger joint.
Subway, 24,722.
McDonald's, 14,098.
Starbucks, 10,821.
Pizza Hut, 7,600.
Burger King, 7,231.
Dunkin' Donuts, 7,015.
Wendy's, 6,594.
Dairy Queen, 6,187.

I will get a breakfast there occasionally. My kids love their nuggets and burgers.
