Congrats and you're correct on all 5 points. Enjoy the life as a father. Never take your kids for granted. Hug them and tell them that you love them as much as you can.

I agree and reading your comments I felt the same way back in October 1994 after our first of three daughters.
What I have learned since then.... They rob your financial resources, time and your sanity if you allow it.
Good news... after 22 years (if all goes well) they get through college and begin their own life. Bad news... You are too worn down to restart your life again.
Just kidding.. sorta.
Congrats.. you will do fine. Anyone who claims to have had their shite together when their first kid was born is a liar.

CONGRATULATIONS! Welcome to the Fatherhood club
My first is almost 10 months old. This is seriously the most fun/most tired I've ever been in my entire life
You'll never get used to it. You'll never feel like you've got it all figured out. And it'll never get old

Feed it when it's hungry. Clean it when it's messy.
Enjoy the time before it can move around on it's own. That's when my dad said we made his life a pain.
You'll be fine.

Wait till you realize that those weird people at the hospital are going to make you take the baby home without any supervision or instruction!

Congratulations to you and your wife. Your lives will never be the same. Embrace it and enjoy it, time flies.
It seems like only yesterday that my son was born - it was 36 years ago.

Amen brother! Congrats to the new made fam!

Congrats OP.
Now consider single mothers who have 6 children with multiple men they are not married to and ponder what they learned about babies...?
Are they not scared of all responsibility?

Here’s some advice from someone who’s been a dad for 20 years:
1. You will make mistakes in the days ahead, but so will your wife. Being a mom does not make one “always right” when it comes to children.
2. No matter what your kid does, some other kid has done it before. Don’t ever think your kid did something so great or awful that it defies imagination. If it’s a problem, relax. Other people have lived through it.
3. Early fatherhood is about patience and integrity. Never make a promise (positive or negative) to a kid that you don’t follow through on. NEVER. Your credibility as a father rests on your ability to follow through. If you always do, your parental authority will be unquestioned.
4. Boys constantly push boundaries because it’s their job to do so. Realize it and remember it. It will help you understand them.
5. Last one - don’t introduce the kid to digital devices too soon. Let the kid play outside, read about animals and teach them where countries are on a map. These are little things that kids miss these days.
Good luck! Fatherhood is the best. Wouldn’t trade my life for anyone else’s, ever.

Congrats on the new baby boy. Don’t blink!!!
I went through the same thing with my mother with my children and I guess I acted the same way when my daughters had children. I think it has something to do with grandmother’s strong maternal instincts to protect no matter what. Ignore your MIL, let her be a new grandmother. Your wife will be happier if you do this. Not a good feeling when people who are not getting along are between a mother and her baby. Make these first months beautiful and full of enjoyment, don’t stymie your wife’s joy. She will love you more for that. Best wishes with your little bundle of joy.
Adding: in about one week you will wish your MIL was living with you for about 6 months!!!

A lot of honesty in your post. When my son came so did a lot of anxiety, just realize you can't control all things all the time. Make boundaries clear to the MIL from the jump or it will be that way forever (I had the same situation) my MIL wanted to be in the delivery room and my wife didn't want her in there so I made that clear from the beginning. Do what makes your household happy and everything else is secondary. My son is about to turn two and it keeps getting better the older he gets, he is a daddy's boy and goes everywhere I go on the weekends. Be there for your wife while she recovers and she will be forever greatful. Good luck man!
