If you have seen a company crash and burn because "the one guy who knew ________ left" - what was the important skill/information and what happened without them?
Saw this on Reddit and thought the comments were interesting.

An absolute star in an engineering company who despite growing his side of the business, increasing efficiency, cutting costs and gaining additional relevant training and qualifications in his own time, hadn't had a meaningful pay rise in five years.
Gave notice after accepting a new position with a 60% pay increase and the company immediately countered with an 80% pay rise offer. That they knew his worth the entire time and refused to pay until they had to enraged him so much that they turned an amicable separation into a hostile one.
He came after their clients with a vengeance and while I think the company still exists it's a lot smaller than before.

The Coors company has long made ceramic lab filters. They custom made a large version of the mass produced lab filters and we had one at my company. We wanted another one so we placed an order. We were told that “X” retired and no one else could make them that large without cracking. X apparently could not impart whatever he did to others.

I had a systems administrator die from COVID and he took several important passwords to his grave. This caused a huge compliance issue as backups were no longer accessible, since he never wrote down the passwords.

There’s a notable difference in the quality of asphalt used in Oregon highways since my grandpa passed away.
He retired twice and stayed on as a consultant until the day he died. They called my grandma after he died and when she told them he had passed she said they seemed more broken up about it than she was after 40 years of marriage.

I’ve often wondered about the cause of the decline in quality of Oregon highway asphalt.

Two real world instances of taking it to your grave.

As a small business owner 40 yrs (sold)
I feel there is only two times an employee should discuss wages w/boss
The day you’re hired and the day you quit. It’s the bosses job to keep you paid according to value to the company.
Otherwise the boss isn't doing his job.

This was me at my old job.
2% yearly raise for 3 years then I took another job offer and all of a sudden they were willing to give a 50% pay raise to keep me. I said thanks but no thanks.
I personally don't think I was that vital to the operation but they did recently call me 2 years later wanting me to do consulting for them.
Talent retention is probably one of the most overlooked aspects in alot of businesses.

Our principal is an idiot, and the administrative assistant basically does her job. I dread the day that assistant quits

Dad was an EE at TVA his whole adult life. He first retired mid 90s and they were calling him daily with questions. They finally got him to take a consulting gig. He retired from that mid 2000’s and said they were still calling him weekly until he died in 2019.
A young EE was at his funeral and showed me this huge book dad left them with designs and schematics and he said the thing was priceless. Said he and every other engineer had learned more from that book than they did in college. Had dad just not cared and took the book with him and cut them off, they most likely would have had a lot of issues.
Mom told me that there should have been many patents put in my dad’s name but the government took them.

So in 40 years you let every employee walk and never countered?

My grandma changed her world famous spaghetti sauce and meatball recipe in her cookbook the day before she passed.

Worked for a company back in the day that used a custom software. Turns out it was maintained by one dude.
Friday afternoon he took it down for upgrades, took a break to have dinner, and dropped dead. Was a mess.
Moral of the story is, if you're a software developer, please keep up on your yearly physicals and labs. Thank you.

Paid uniforms and 15 paid holidays.
Many were 20plus yrs.
