What does a college professor have to be arrogant about? Many of the ones I have known were losers in life. Many can’t make it in the real world job market and hide in academia.

Some of us have patents and do consulting work for industry, and just enjoy the freedom to explore topics of interest academia provides. That and the whole having to contribute new knowledge to humanity in order to receive a PhD gives some reason to be arrogant, but the good ones are usually low key with it. There are dipshits in every department, and most of the professors dislike them as much as the students.

It’s good advice. I’ll respond to anything in the classroom or lab (Mr, Dr, Captain, first name, uh, professor, etc). I do get slightly irked though in emails when coaches/secretaries/administrators use “Mr. Bamacheme”

Was really tempted to dress down a coach whose “masters” degree came from U of Phoenix after receiving a less than cordial email.

Emails are different. They are usually sent to a Professor or whatever in a more Professional sense, but when in the classroom or whatever.....

I retired from the Army as a Colonel. I know PLENTY of dickheads who insist on being addressed by their rank even in casual settings. To me that's just sanctimonious. I guest lecture on occasion at the local juco and though I do use my rank as part of my official greeting to students to sort of add a little gravitas to my lectures, I don't insist that they address me as such. Though I'm not a fan of being addressed by my first name by students either. Your Lordship is a good compromise.

No one is arguing any of those points.

They're complaining about the professors who behave like know-it-all snobs (on any topic) and enjoy being authority figures rather than free-thinking educators.

Even back in my day there were plenty of professors who graded based on you simply regurgitating what they had told you at test time. This is nothing new.

What does this even mean? It’s college. Aside from gaining field specific knowledge, college teaches you how to learn and think critically.

Use those skills to read broadly and figure out how to think deeply about a subject. Then, perhaps, you’ll be able to understand your professors viewpoint and be able to have an intelligent discussion.

I try to teach the way I parent. I certainly want things done my way, but no reason to be a dick about it.

Teaching is not parenting.

Also, the ideas and complaints you have presented in this thread are wildly inconsistent. For example, two posts ago, you criticized professors who grade based on "regurgitation." And in this post you talk about wanting "things done my way." See the contradiction?

After reading your posts, I'm honestly not sure what your issue is, other than maybe you think you could do the job better than actual professors. If that's the case, then why don't you try to become one?

I didn't say it was. I said I treat a SINGE aspect of both the same

I didn't even say I had an issue. You however clearly suffer from an inability to comprehend what you are reading. I've merely told a few stories that I found humorous or annoying. I didnt draw any conclusions from them.

Nah, you've been complaining about professors for like five pages now. And, as I said, those complaints are pretty incoherent.

I most certainly have not been. I posted a few funny stories from my college years, and remarked about teachers who insist on being called Dr are usually dickheads, and that's pretty much it.

You called one a "count." You also told an obviously BS story about a professor docking you points for being in the military. Etc. Not sure what you point is, other than maybe you just don't like professors. But that doesn't make you unique or original or clever. It is pretty popular to pile on professors these days -- part of the anti-intellectual turn in our twisted culture.

If I earned a PhD. I would insist on it too... it's a hell of an achievement

Rude and arrogant professors.

I remember in college I had a professor who did not want to listen to our point of view on the subject in class.

He screamed at us.

I don't believe you went to college.

Teaching class is the least of their concerns.
They are judged on their research which is their full time gig.
It's about the research dollars they bring in to the university over anything else they do.

They don't really know life outside academia. Product of their own environment, really. I can't imagine working at a university is a pleasant experience nowadays.

Eh, that's a generalization that isn't always the case. My wife teaches at a university and also works full time in her field.
