What are you in 4th grade? Maybe you should have listened to your professors more, you would've learned something.

my grandpa's dissertation is typed on a typewriter on some kind of ancient papyrus they used back then, hand-bound, and the size of two maybe three encyclopedias. for that amount of effort, i get why he wants to be called a dr. plus, i'm sure all those pages said something important.

Your grandapa was just getting his proper respect. Ph.Ds were called doctors whilst those with a professional license in medicine were called by their more accurate term “barber”

It doesn’t actually matter that much, but it’s always fun getting MDs and DOs worked up about that.

Skipped most of this thread.

Had a History professor at UGA that ENCOURAGED you to debate him. If you wrote some meaningless essay, that agreed with what he taught in class, he'd tear you a new a-hole. He was the antithesis of rote learning. It didn't matter how you stood on any issue, he'd argue.

The more you argued, the better your grade.

On the other hand, my organic chemistry professor, who had a PHD in Education told us from "day one", "You will have a mini-test every day that will account for 1/3 of your grade".

Memorization and rote learning has its place.

I enjoyed both styles of teaching.

I burned up a Smith Corona typewriter doing my thesis. Fortunately when dissertation time role around a few years later the computer was the way to go.
