Never understood this. Shorting yourself one shell and giving the intruder more time to react.

FYI, the idea that 00 buckshot stops in sheetrock has been debunked every time it has been tested. You may like your shotgun, but don't go believing that 00 buck will not penetrate multiple walls in your home.

They've watched too many movies. They should only hear the bang.

I live in Mandeville. I think it's 1 murder in the past 18-20 years. I never want to be unprepared from an intruder with my wife sleeping next to me.

Exactly. Rack that slide once and it should be enough warning.

Well, no not exactly. A home defense gun should have a round chambered at all times. If you have to rack a shotgun you are ejecting a shell which is dumb.

Edit: I have a Glock 19 in the nightstand and an 870 20ga youth model on the side of the bed. I also have a Glock 17 on top of the fridge.

Don't a lot of these pistols go straight through walls? Bad idea if you have kids in rooms nearby.

Hint: if a round doesn't penetrate drywall, it's also not penetrating the first 1/4" of flesh and will thus not stop any bad guy.

How do you guys hide them from the kids? I have a daughter and even though she isn't able to walk yet, I need to plan ahead. Any suggestions?

My advice would be so NOT hide them from your kids. Growing up my dad made damn sure we knew where the guns were in the house. He also made damn sure we knew that if we so much as looked funny at them we were dead meat. He educated us on the importance of self defense, on the fact that a gun is a tool, one that must be respected.

Since we knew all about the guns being there, we weren't curious to mess with them. If I wanted to shoot one all I had to so was ask and he'd take me to the range.

It was the same way with liquor and beer in the house. It was always around, beer in the fridge and a few bottles in the liquor cabinet. It was no big deal to me and I never even considered sneaking some. The first time it ever even crossed my mind was when a friend of mine spent the night. His family was very bible thumping baptist and teetotallers. He flipped when he saw beer in our fridge. Then he said "hey, let's steal some and drink it". I was shocked. It had never occurred to me, and I had no desire to.

The surest way to make a kid curious about something is to deny them that thing. The temptation is only there when it seems they "shoudln't".

Keep the gun out of reach until she's old enough to start to talk to her and reason with. Then, let it be known EXACTLY what the rules are. And reinforce them with extreme prejudice.

The point is that any effective round will penetrate walls. There simply is no magic round that will guarantee safety in other rooms while being able to kill the person standing in yours.

OK I will clarify. Buckshot will penetrate drywall, but lose a LOT of momentum, making it less likely to do further damage.

To the person that said pumping a shotgun ejects a shell, that's only if there's one in the chamber.

By not chambering a round, the gun is safer if it some kid decides to mess with it.

Also, to those that say the only thing the bad guy should hear is a bang. That's tuff talk and all, but if you had the opportunity to NOT kill someone, wouldn't you prefer it?

I've got no real problem shooting some piece of shite that is in my house, but even if it's a clean shoot, fully justified, that legal nightmare and other bullshite that comes with taking someone's life can ruin yours.

Just look at this Ferguson bullshite. The evidence is looking more and more like the cop was justified in shooting that thug. But does that matter to Mike Brown's supporters, scumbag ambulence chasing lawyers, and rioters? Nope. I'm sure that officer Wilson, given a second chance to deal with that situation and not shoot Brown, would take it in a heart beat.
